Freezing Breastmilk- Going on a Trip...

Does anyone know if its ok to freeze breastmilk that has already been in the fridge for a few days? At what point, if it all, would you still freeze it? I have some in the fridge that I probably won't end up using, and I hate to throw it away. This seems to happen often with me, I put it in the fridge just in case I'm going to need it then it end up giong bad before I use it.

Another breastfeeding question, I will be gone from my baby for a full day, from 7am to 9pm, coming up this weekend and probably won't be able to pump. Will this be horribly uncomfortable? Will my supply be affected? I'm going on a bus trip to NYC and will be walking around the city for the day. I'm freaking out about being away from my 3 mo old for a whole day, almost want to cancel, but I also could use a mini vacation. And give the hubby some practice with 2 kids. Any advice would be great, thanks!

What can I do next?

I found conflicting information by doing a quick google search as it's been a few years since I nursed.

Breast milk needs to be used within 24-48 hours after being pumped if in the refrigerator according to breastisbest.com (http://www.breastisbest.com/infofreezingbreastmilk.html)

It's not worth the possibility of bacterial growth after that point in my opinion. Though, I'm sure we froze/used breast milk up to 3 days after pumping.

You will become very engorged if you're used to expressing your milk many times during the day when you're gone, and it will affect your supply because you are dramatically reducing your demand.

My advice, take your pump, get a locker at the bus station to store it while you're walking around and pump in the morning/afternoon either on the bus or when you arrive at the station in the bathroom.

I had to travel multiple times while travelling for business, and I've pumped in many airport bathrooms. it stinks, but if it's important to nurse your child, you'll figure it out. You can also get a hand pump which is much smaller and store it in your purse (though it takes longer). I'd recommend dumping whatever you pump as you won't be able to keep it cold.

I've had to pump and dump several times - I know you're flushing precious breast milk down the drain, but it was more important to keep the production up.

Here's what the American Academy of Pediatrics has to say about breastfeeding as well (there are several pages of articles):

Good luck. Enjoy the day if you can.

I have frozen breastmilk up to a week after pumping and storing it in the refrigerator. It has always been fine for my kids to eat, as long as they drink it right after it is defrosted.

As far as going on a trip, I know I was very uncomfortable when I had to do something like that in the past. I found that after I went to Target and got a small manual pump, I could duck into the bathroom for a few minutes a few times a day to just relieve the pressure. I sometimes tried to save the milk, but I found that it was often more trouble than it was worth. But the small pump fit into my purse, and I used breast pump wipes (also available at Target), so I never had to worry about cleaning it in bathroom sinks or anything.

there are some good answers below; I would also suggest you check out La Leche League (www.llli.org) - they have great information and advice.

The guidelines for breastmilk storage were updated awhile back. If the breastmilk has been in the fridge less than 8 days you can freeze it.
Here are the latest guidelines on kellymom.com:

Since baby is only 3 mos. old and you are going to be away for 14 hours, you can probably expect some discomfort since your body is used to producing every 2-3 hours for baby's schedule. You may have to take a break at some point and hand express if you get really uncomfortable. So you might carry a couple of bottles in your purse that you can express into and dump.

Don't worry about your supply. It's only one day. If you were to not nurse, not pump often then yes it would affect your supply but not one day

When I didn't nurse or pump, I leaked like CRAZY! So if I were you, I'd pump like Dana suggested. And wear a breastpad too. Maybe pack an extra shirt if you have room or if you have leaked ever.

When my son was 1 month old, I had to leave for just one day (8 hours) and felt very full and in pain just going an extra hour past his normal nursing time. I had to go pump. As for your supply, I don't think it won't be affected in one day, but you never know.

8 days sounds like too much. I don't remember how long I let it stay in the fridge. If I had some in the fridge, I just froze whatever I'd just pumped. I'd better be safe than sorry and dump anything over 4 days.
