Frequent Urination in 6 Year Old

My son is in 1st grade and he will be 7 in June. Lately (the last couple of weeks) he's been very irritable and getting into trouble at school. We were trying to figure out what was going on and then I noticed that he has been urinating frequently (every hour or less at home) and noticed his underwear was a little yellow. So I looked at his underwear the last four days and all had some yellow staining. I asked him about it and he said he's been leaking out a little either before he pees or after when he thinks he's done. I asked if it hurt to pee and he said it didn't. Although he says he gets the urge to pee frequently at school. So I'm not sure if the problems at school are related to this or not. I'm bringing him to the doctor this afternoon to rule out medical problems. Also plan to meet with his teacher to see what's going on there. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Took him to the doctor on Friday and they tested him for a UTI and it was negative. Then they tested him for Diabetes and it was also negative (normal). So we ruled those two things out. The Dr thought it could be behavioral/stress related and wanted us to see if it continues in the next two weeks. If he's still having problems then we would bring him in and they can do more tests.

My son started peeing a lot and having behavioral issues and we found out it was type 1 (juvenile) diabetes. I would say get him to the dr asap...if it is diabetes, he could become very sick (flu-like symptoms) very fast, and it can be fatal.

Just knowing what I know (and I hope I am wrong!) I would get him in to the doctor today.

My first thought is a bladder infection.

My thoughts immediately go to diabetes. Frequent urination is a HUGE red flag for diabetes. Has he also been very thirsty? Do ordinary scratches take longer to heal? At the very LEAST if you know someone with a glucometer, ask them to test his blood sugar. if it is over 100 - 120 ish range (I'm not positive on the children's scale) - Then he needs to see a doctor right away. If it is in the 500 or above range, he needs to go to an ER, and I'm not kidding about that!

Could be behavioral/stress but rule out diabetes first; however, please do not go to Wal-Mart or anywhere else for some over-the-counter blood glucose testing kit as someone suggested! A doctor should test your son for diabetes. Over the counter kits are not intended to diagnose diabetes -- let the professionals do that. These kits are for people with diabetes to test their own blood sugar levels but are not diagnostic tools! I've recently seen medical articles in two reputable daily newspapers (not Internet hype) interviewing doctors who are worried about a trend of people trying to self-diagnose diabetes, or trying to diagnose family members, using home kits. I hope you figure out soon what's wrong with your son -- but with a doctor's help.

I went through a similar situation with my son in the 1st grade. All of a sudden, he started wetting his pants at school. We also went to the doctor to rule out a medical cause.

Come to find out, some boys had been picking on him at school. I think the stress of moving from kindergarten to 1st grade, plus the teasing, caused him to revert. (Boys seem to revert in their potty-training more than girls. I don't know why!)

Anyway, I spoke to his teacher about the situation. She had a word with the other boys and my son as well. The problem cleared up in a matter of weeks. (A big hurrah for grade school teachers.)

Hope this helps.

Like some of the others, my sister had this same problem and she ended up being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and was in the ICU for a week (he blood sugar when she was in the ER was almost 1200, normal is under 180 non-fasting). Either get him into a doctor ASAP or go to like Walmart and buy one of the blood glucose testing kits (I have seen them advertised for $9).

C., my little one is almost the same as yours (1st grade, will be 7 in May) and he's not having the school problems, but has been FREQUENTLY needing to urinate (in the course of one tv show, he'll have to pause it 3-6 times for a restroom run!) Did you discover any answers? Was the doctor's appt helpful? Thanks!!

My son had a similar problem and we discoved he was constipated. He was still pooping, but was blocked enough that the pressure from the colon was pushing on the bladder, making him feel like he needed to go. The Doctor had him drink Miralax (prune juice might work too) which loosens up the stool so it can be processed. They tested for diabetes but that was negative.

A couple of things...My son three was having the same issue...We put two and two together and connected the dots to realize it was insecurity because we had just taken the nighttime pacifier away. We gave it back for the nights and he has been fine.
First of all I would have him see the pediatrician and rule out infection/diabetes. I did th is.
If his testing comes back fine then there could be an underlying issue...stress or fear or frustration. Has his diet changed? Is he having a hardtime learning? Is he being picked on?

Check out this link. It helped me relax a little more when we had gone through all this stuff with our son.

Happens to my daughter as well. She has issues with constipation--has had since she was little--and if it's been a while since she's had a BM, not only does she get awful cramps, but she leaks urine as well. And has to go to the bathroom more. Once she has a BM, those issues go away. Might want to check into that.

I would want to rule out diabetes (have two nephews with Type 1).

My son had a similar problem before we went gluten free. I really can't explain why the diet change seemed to help that issue. My guess is that he had inflammation in his body from eating foods he is highly intolerant to, and maybe that made his bladder feel like he had to go.

Good luck getting this resolved.
