My friend's 11 month old daughter won't eat any baby food or table food. All she takes is formula. What's wrong with her and what can be done to get her to eat?

What can I do next?

She isn't ready yet. One of my daughters was the same way. Just keep trying a bite or two each day and let it go. She will eat. As long as she is still growing fine, don't worry.

First try rice cereal mixed very thin with formula. After she gets used to that for a few days make it a little thicker, or mix some banana babyfood in with the formula and rice cereal. Gradually introduce it. Also, only feed her half a bottle or less before a meal of solid foods. All you will get is a frustrated baby if shes ravenous when you are trying something new. Good luck!

I breastfed my daughter until she was 12 months. She was not interested in eating until after I was done breastfeeding. She's perfectly healthy at 21 months!

Oh gosh, my 19 month old went through this. Barely ate baby food, less than a jar a day and really no table food. Today, we still struggle with food, she still would rather drink milk, but she does eat! She will come around in her own time. Keep offering it at every meal. My daughter is very active and hated sitting in a highchair, so we were able to get more food in her if we fed her as she ran around. After she turned a year, our pediatrician recommended Carnation Instant Breakfast to try to keep her weight up, which was her breakfast for a long time. Anyway, we just kept trying and trying and I think it was around 15 months or so, overnight she started eating some of what we put in front of her. My daughter has no sensory issues, she just needed to come around in her own time. That being said, she did eat a tiny amount of baby food and some puffs/yogurt snacks at that age.

Ask the Pediatrician... until then, it will only be guesswork.

Formula, is still very important... on demand feeding. And especially since the baby will not "eat" yet.

if she is 11 months old and mom is concerned, I would recommend she talk with her pediatrician. She can get a referral for a therapist who specializes in pediatric feeding (either a speech or occupational therapist). they can assess if there is a motor or sensory reason why she is not eating.

good luck!

I wouldn't worry too much about it. My son was breastfed then switched to formula at about 11 months. He never was a good eater, but always LOVED his formula. He was always off the charts equally on both height and weight. As a matter of fact, he loved formula so much, we gave his Enfamil Next Step for years. He drank milk too, and ate, but they make formula these days to be so nutritious, that there is no reason to force them off of it if they like it.

It's totally normal. With both my daughters they hated all baby food. But my doc just said as long as they are getting plenty of Breast Milk and are still gaining weight they will start to like just regular table food once I started to wean them. So her baby is fine, some kids are just like that. Both my girls were pretty fat, at 6 months my first was 19 1/2 pounds and my second was 21 pounds at about 6 months and they were both really health too. They would have little taste of table food here and there around 10 and 11 months but it wasn't until they were a year that I weaned them and they started eating real food. So tell your friend not to worry too much.

Sensory issues. She needs to be seen by a speech/language pathologist or occupational therapist who deals with sensory processing issues. Things need to be woken up in her mouth, body and brain. This will manifest into other things as time goes by.
