I AM THE QUEEN OF THEME!!!
How about a Night at the Oscars (this makes it an evening party).
Check out this web site (http://www.orientaltrading.com/) for balloons, party items lite champagne flutes (for sparkling cider) , plastic tableware.
Decor:
Outside use white Christmas lights & a red plastic tablecloth to create your runway.
Employ your girlfriends to help announce the actors & take pictures as they enter against a backdrop made using a refrigerator box, white satin sheets (I found at a second hand store) and film strip transparencies I created using an image of a black & white film strip I printed on transparent paper. I cut them, stapled them together & used them like steamers & as the invitations.
I had all guests come dressed as their favorite actor would as if it were Oscar night. This made it a bit formal but kids are on their best behavior when they are dressed accordingly ;-) We played games like movie & music trivia, etc. I had the kids cast ballots (also made using the film strip on card stock paper) for the best actor, best dressed, most likable actor, game winners, etc and handed out tiny Oscars (Oriental Trading).
I'm not one for social foods so I went to Costco & got those condiment bowls to put dips in so each kid would have their own; no colds thank you! . For appetizers I served veggie & fruit trays (fruit dip: plain yogurt & honey; kids love it!! ) The main course I made veggie lasagna rolls (mozzarella & ricotta cheese, fresh shredded spinach, alfredo sauce (bottom of pan) red sauce spooned across top to add color). Cook noodles as you would if you were making layered lasagna. Spread the filling onto each noodle roll and bake. This way portions are equal and they kids can serve themselves.
I went to the Dollar Tree & found a photo album in which I made a scrap book of the nights events for my daughter. I had all her guests autograph the pictures taken in front of the backdrop I made along with various snap shots taken throughout the evening. I also gave each guest a copy of the picture. My girlfriends helped me frame them during the party, again using the film strip transparencies as frames.
My daughter loved it as did her friends.
I hope this helps. If you need more ideas just drop me a line....
