Hi moms! I am looking for some fun educational, musical DVD's for my almost 2yr old. I am looking for one with "manners", "right from wrong" and "things he shouldn't touch" for safety. He loves music and dancing. Any ideas or suggestions?
As an FYI, I do work with my son daily, for I am a stay at home mom, but once in a while I need to get some things done around the house or he wants his own space and time.
Thanks and I love this site!!
K.

Well, my daughter watches a lot of videos because she has stopped napping. She will be two in a few weeks. Don't feel like you have to defend your choice to show a DVD and have a break! (although I feel a little guilt about that too) My daughter loves Maisy and Elmo DVDs. Max and Ruby are great too. Also, Noggin and Sprout are good channels on TV that have some quality shows. "Jacks Big Music Show" on Noggin is great for songs, etc. For us, the guilt comes now that we are watching "Finding Nemo", "Winnie the Pooh", and "Wall-E" a lot. If you still have a VCR, you can probably find a lot of choices at your local thrift shop. I know I have found some treasures at the Junior League thrift store in Evanston for a dollar each! Also, my daughter easily scratched her $20 Nemo DVD (oops!), but can't seem to harm the VHS tapes.

The older Wiggles with Greg are great. My daughter is 4 and still watches them. They are a lot of fun. My daughter loved anything to do with music and also enjoyes Noggin, the laurie berkner band, the backyardigans. Max and Ruby are great as is Little Bill (on Noggin).
There are Nick Jr. Dvds #1-#6 that have multi episodes. There are episodes of Dora, the Backyardigans, Max and Ruby, Blues Clues, Little Bill, Jack's big music show. They are pretty inexpensive at Wal-mart $7.50 I think.

Hope this helps!

Hi, K.. I know this is not quite what you asked for, but my daughter LOVES The Laurie Berkner Band. She has music C.D.'s and one DVD out. In the DVD, the band sings and little kids dance to the songs. My daughter loves to dance and sing while she watches them. We even took her to see the band "live" in Chicago this Christmas. It was a lot of fun. It's not educational, but maybe could fall under music and exercise? : )

I'll also put in a plug for Little Einsteins--my daughter loves them (as do I--I am a (non-practicing at the moment)band director, so no surprise there!)! We also watch PBS shows in the morning: Curious George is great for a 2-year-old (8:00 a.m. & 4:00 p.m. shows), and my daughter also really likes SuperWhy!, which works on pre-reading (9:00 a.m. & 1:30 p.m. (I think)) and things like manners, etc..

I DVR Seasame Street for my 2 year old son. He loves Elmo and learns numbers and letters.
If you have a DVR you can pretty much "tape" any children's programs and then play them when it is television time.

Kidsongs is great!!! I just ordered some for my almost 2 year old daughter (she is 22 months now) for Christmas off of the Toys R Us website. I understand how it is when you just need a few moments to yourself or just need to get some stuff done around the house that is exactly when I put the DVD in myself!! I also have some Barney DVD's that my daughter watches...one is about manners and then Sesame Street also has some great educational DVD's too.

Although not a DVD but a CD... "Sounds Like Fun" CD has great songs about manners, phonics, counting, spanish and much more. I am a Discovery Toys Consultant and had many customers rave about it over the years.Check it out on my website: www.discoverytoyslink.com/atoylady

My daughter also loves Hi-5 (mentioned earlier). For getting us all moving we love a DVD called Baby Dance. Barney always has messages about good behavior - the show is on PBS and there are also videos.

My kids always enjoyed the Veggie Tales DVD's and music Cd's. They have themes like what to do when you are scared at night, how to share, being kind, etc. and many of them refer to biblical stories. I was a great way for us to help teach good behaviors as well as bible stories in a way tat the kids would enjoy.

Hi K.,
There is a Sesame Street DVD out that prepares kids for emergencies such as hurricanes, etc. I actually want to get this to teach my kids as I have a home day care and I teach my little ones at church. Doesn't hurt to teach them to be prepared. Link is below. Also, I have found the Little Einsteins DVD to be the best for my kids. Not only are they educational but they are fun and very entertaining. Not Baby Einstein, these are good but for smaller babies, Little Einsteins is geared towards 2 year olds and up. I have 6 and 7 yr olds that still love them. They teach kids using famous paintings and art work, combined with classical music such as Bach and Beethoven. Best of all, it's not mind numbing like Dora can be. Check out video clips on YouTube. Good luck!!

Hi!
My son loves the KidsSongs DVD's. They are songs and videos and "interviews" made by kids as like a TV Show. They are kind of old--think some 80's hair and interview with Debbie Gibson, but still enjoyable. There are all different topics--animals, water world, even Fun with Manners. My mom has found them in the cheap section at Walmart, but they also have their own website I can look up if you want!

Don't feel guilty about some TV!! The winter is filled with some long days indoors!

Does your little one like Elmo? They have a lot of DVD's with him in it teaching all kinds of stuff. They are usually about 30 minutes or so. Toys R Us or Best Buy have a good selection.

Our family LOVES HI-5. My daughter (2.5) and son too (4.5) request this show over and over again. It is comparible to the Wiggles however no so.....creepy (sorry for all the Wiggle fans they just creep me out!) There are 3 females and 2 males all young adults. They sing, dance, pretend and have never displayed anything that I would not want my children say or do. You can find their show on Discovery Kids channel or videos are available on Amazon.com. Good luck!
