OK, I've lived in Olathe, KS for years so I should know about all the cool stuff to do, but you never know, I might be missing something. We may be doing a "staycation" later in the summer so I'm looking for fun activities around here. I would certainly be open to a day trip or even staying over somewhere just one night. I think we'll probably try to catch a Royals game and perhaps go to the Great Wolf Lodge.
Anyone have other ideas of places that people sometimes forget about in their own backyard?
Thanks and have a Great Weekend!!

Very Funny Flaming Turnip!! My boys are 14 and 11.

I'm sure you have thought of Worlds of Fun. You can probably see if you can get discount tickets at the City of Olathe Parks and Recreation. Bonner Springs has the Marble Moon Factory it is a pretty neat place to go and check out how marbles are made. There is Deanna Rose, and the Overland Park Arboretum. The WW1 Museum is a GREAT place to go, but you may be there all day. We were there for 5 or 6 hours, and didn't see half of the place. (But my husband loves history so that is why). Have you ever been up to the Legends? There is Dave and Busters, I'm sure your boys might like that. Hope you have fun whatever you decide to do!
Here are a couple of ideas

Schlitterbahn is very fun too!!!
We did the great wolf lodge last summer, my husband and daughter loved it. There's also Coco Keys, which is like Great Wolf except cheaper and they offer day rates if you don't have a hotel room there.
There are also museums and stuff. The Nelson-Atkins is amazing (my 6 year old was very fascinated this year by the mummy in the Egyptian area) and free, you just have to pay for parking if you park in the parking garage.
There's also Missouri Town 1855, if you like that sort of thing.
If you don't mind the drive up to St. Joseph, there is a great museum right next to the Jesse James house. So you can go to the Jesse James house, see where he was shot and learn about that, and then go next door and learn all about the history of St. Joseph and also more about Missouri's role in the Civil War. (I had no idea people owned slaves this far North! Lee's Summit even has a part of it's cemetery that are unmarked slave graves!)
Topeka has a pretty cool zoo if you're bored with the KC zoo. I keep seeing the Kansas History Museum in Topeka pop up on Mysteries at the Museum on the Travel Channel, so we're going to try to go out there and visit this summer.
I haven't been there, but I've heard the WWI museum is pretty neat. There's also the new aquarium and Legoland at Crown Center.
Schlitterbahn!!!!!! we can't wait for summer :-)
My son is only 5 so I'm not too good with ideas for older kids yet. But maybe one of these would hold their interest:
Nelson-Atkins
Kemper Museum
Dragon Boat Festival
Legoland
Steamboat Arabia
WWI Museum
Money Museum at the Federal Reserve Bank
Sporting KC
T-Bones
Coterie Theatre
Trails at the Lakeside Nature Center
Airline History Museum
Local carnivals/festivals
ugh jo, that's NOT funny....*grumble grumble stupid snow grumble grumble*
i live here and am very happy. except for the now 2 day old snow on my tulips...grr!
your boys might be getting to the age where visiting a college campus might be cool?? you might look into stuff to do on the K-State campus or KU campus - i went to Emporia state, which is a nice drive but not much exciting to do. they have a little (TINY) zoo there but it's not really worth a whole day trip...unless you're just feeling adventurous.
your boys would probably love dave and busters and power play. and the zoo - i know your boys are older but the zoo should still be fun provided they're not "too cool" to go.
you could take a drive out to the Flint Hills, they are very pretty and a fun road trip. I know out in central/western kansas they do horseback trail rides, i've always wanted to do that.
also, don't forget about Ernie Miller nature park. talk about in our own back yard!
one last thing, it's a bit of a drive, but they might like the Cosmosphere out in Hutch (i think it was like a 4 hour drive). we took our 6 year old and some stuff was a bit over his head, lots of reading. but there were some really cool presentations with science experiments (the Goddard Lab rocket one was awesome!) it's probably perfect for your boys' ages...providing they are the least bit interested in space. get them to watch Apollo 13 before you go, they have the lunar module and a cool display. very cool.
oh one LAST last thing (lol) - i have heard the Omaha zoo is REALLY cool - and you should look into St. Louis, too. lots of stuff to do. i haven't done either but have heard lots of good things. hth!
My kids are a bit younger, but... the Nelson (it's free and besides art has a mummy, my kids love) and a great outside to picnic on. Steamboat arabia was great, my kids were too young when we went. There's the city market (by steamboat arabia) with lots of yummy eats and smells, lots of good local restaurants (westisde local, blue bird bistro, little freshie for slushies, bella napoli and many many more), disc golfing (there's supposed to be a good disk golf course near the origional oklahoma joe's), the plaza/brush creek is fun, along with the Nelson is Kemper and the Nerman (at JOhnsoncounty community college). There are horse trail rides in the area, Shatto Dairy is a good visit, the Zoo is pretty good (if it's been a few years, it's much better than it used to be). Topeka has a good zoo too and the capital and other stuff too... We've got a lot! Look into festivals and such too, it seems there's always something going on. Also, drive a few neighborhoods that you usually don't. it's more interesting than you think.
I don't know how old your kids are, but what about the cool free farm park in Overland Park?
If I remember correctly, it is free most times... and is set up to look like an old-fashioned farmstead...

Great place to spend the day with kids!
