Because of the high gas prices, my husband and I have decided to stay at home for our vacation. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for places to go or things to do that are relatively inexpensive (free is even better)! We have a little boy who turns 2 tomorrow and we would like to take him with us. We will of course go to the zoo. Our vacation is June 12th-16th. Is anything fun going on that weekend that anyone knows about? We live in St. Peters and would like to drive not much more than an hour to our destination. Does anyone know of any great kid friendly places to eat too? Thanks in advance for all your help!! You all always give such great advice!!!

What can I do next?

Grants Farm is WONDERFUL! You only pay for parking, but everything else is basically free (with the exception of food and beverages!) My kids LOVE the giant tram that takes you through the grounds and lets you see all the animals roaming free. It's a great place- they put on free shows with animals, have a goat feeding area, and also have some other animals you'll find at the zoo- elephants, camels, and such. It's a great place and you can get through the whole thing in just a couple of hours, which- lets face it, is about all my family can handle with little ones. At the end is a fabulous open area with food. My kids love their hot dogs and you can see their giant horses at the end too. The tram takes you back to the begininng again- what a wonderful day! Come to think of it, I think I'll take my kids there this weekend. A word of advice, it's best to try and get there first thing in the morning...! Have a great vacation!

Hi L.,
I'm in St Peters also.
My little girl turns 2 on the 6th!! Happy birthday to your son. My daughter loves to eat at Pizza Street !! How about camping? We know of a place and they have all sorts of activities for kids and a sandy beach. It's 1.5 hours away but fun and the people are very friendly there. Let me know if you want more info. Oh and there is a drive in movie close to the campground and plays double features for $5 per person and he would be free!!

Magic House -- the best day ever for little ones. For even more of a vacation feel, you could stay at a hotel nearby and swim in the pool.

Hi. I also live in St. Peters. Have you looked into the rec-plex? Also, Waplehorst (spelling may be wrong) water park? It is over off Muegge Rd. and I have been told they have a great toddler area. I would be taking my little one there but am expecting my next baby very soon. My step daughter begs to go there. There is also a really neat toddler park next to the city center on Mexico Rd. we like to go to. They also have walking trails and picnic tables there as well. I hope this helps!

I live in O'Fallon, and I feel your pain! I do have a few ideas...I don't know if you have thought of any of these yet but here you go....The Magic House, The Butterfly House and the World's Fair Caroseul (sorry if I spelled that wrong), City Museum, He's probably too young for Six Flags, Museum of Transportation-especially if he likes trains, and the WF&P Railroad train. It is a little train that you can ride along the Meramac river. It is a really cool little train and it is very inexpensive. I am not sure if it is open due to the high water so you might want to google it. It is in Wildwood off of Highway 109. My Dad used to take us there every year when I was a kid and I loved it. I hope I have given you a few ideas that you haven't thought of. Good luck and have fun!
