try Brothers
(a few in bay area- like one near costco RWC)
Lots to choose from, and they deliver and set- up
cheap or free (tips +) if you buy a few pieces...
They will price match...

I'd suggest craigslist.org and local consignment stores. Congrats to your family! Being a 1st time home owner is so exciting. :)

Go to freecycle.org, type in the zipcode appropriate, and sign up. YOu wouldn't believe the free stuff that goes through this group, and it goes FAST!!!

Have you checked on freecycle.org? It's basically an online swap meet for folks who don't want to bother selling their old stuff. I got rid of a big old (non-energy efficient) freezer that way. I've also heard that people have gotten great deals on craigslist.

I have had great luck on Craigslist. You need to know what you want and look everyday. The good stuff goes quickly.
Ikea also has inexpensive furniture. But it seems to be only as good as who puts it together. My husband spends a lot of time making sure all the joints are solid and it has really lasted for us.
