Gaining Weight. All Comments and Suggestions Welcome.

I know most questions are about losing but I am having problems gaining. My father is 47 and hasn't been able to gain weight since he was a jr. in high school. I guess his dad(my grampa) was the same too. Although I have a good appetite and seem to eat well I don't think I am eating the right things to gain weight. I got sick about a month ago and lost 10 pounds and can't seem to gain it back yet. I am 5foot 3 and only weigh 95. I gained 40 pounds with both of my children and within months I lost it all again. I am not sure what to do to gain weight. At this point I would like to be 105 atleast as that is what I have been for about 5 years until now. But my goal weight is about 115 so I have a little more to myself if you know what I mean. Any comments and suggestions are welcome.

So What Happened?

I have had this problem for so long and haven't known what to do. I am happy to hear that I am not the only one, even though I wouldn't wish it upon anyone. It is hard to have this problem especially not being happy with being the weight that I am but I guess I am on the other end of the spectrum than many that would switch places with me in an instant. None the less, thank you for the advice. I am trying a few things and will be using all of the advice and also passing it on to my family.

Hello H.;
We have a couple of family members with a similar issue. I would recommend researching lactoferrin. It's best to use one that is thoroughly prepared in order that no bovine material remains. This leaves only the healthful digestive lactoferrin which is a prebiotic. This substance is necessary in order for the digestive system to maintain the probiotics. Dr. Naidu is an internationally known scientist who has perfected lactoferrin preparations. He was recently recognized for his work with lactoferrin which also kills e coli and candida.
Our daughter has enjoyed a healthy weight increase using lactoferrin and a green barley juice powder. A friend of ours, a nurse practitioner, hadn't seen her for about a year and commented on her improved health, weight, and hair growth. The improvement this had made in her was very noticeable and as a health professional she recognized the signs of it right away.
Best,
S.

My sister had this problem. She'd drink Ensure or a similar brand. She'd also make high caloric shakes (buy mix at nutrition store). These would not be meal replacements, but in addition to 3 complete meals. Consulting a nutritionist would help. I know weight can be gained by eating chips, cookies, and ice cream between meals. But, that wouldn't be healthy. :-)

Well, I have to say I envy your problem! If I could donate I would!! I had a good guy friend who had the same problem and being a guy it was a MAJOR issue for him. We became work out buddies and would lift weights 2-3 times a week as muscle weighs more than fat and you just look better. Before and after each work out he would have a high protien shake (we found trader joe's whey ones to be the best, vanilla with a bannana). He would eat three balanced meals in larger portions than normal and eat it all, even if he felt full. he also would eat at least two snacks between meals. nuts are a good choice as well as cheese and yogurt. with his increase caloric intake plus the weight lifting he was able to bulk up quite a bit. while he did this I did the opposite and lost inches! As long as you are eating healthy (ie:getting enough of each food group)you will be fine. good luck, and if you know how I can donate weight to you let me know!! I have plenty to share!! : )

Hey H.,
I found the 10 lbs you lost...on my hips! :)

My daughter has the same problem although she eats like a bird. I would suggest going to your doctor and asking his/her advice.

I don't want to joke about your problem, but I know there are many of us who can teach you how to gain weight, but you should probably do it in a more proper format...than say, eating an entire bag of m&ms in one sitting (the family size), eating a brownie the size of the pan (and counting it as one brownie), eating the entire plate at a restaurant (versus taking home half of it). In other words, some of us who have weight issues could easily give you advice, but I think you want to put on the right kind of weight, so I would seek nutritional or professional help to do it right.

Good luck. I have never in my life had this problem. I wish I could share about 20 lbs with you!

Hi H.!

There is a product called Muscle Milk which is a weight gainer. My friend LOVED it althomesough he did notread the label... he was trying to lose weight!! Go figure! It comes in a few flavors so you could have a variety. If you have no apetite you could try adding some more zinc to your diet... studies have shown that it increases appetites in the anorexics.
