i just had a baby boy on march 15. within the first couple of weeks from bringing him home he became very constipated and gassy. i breast feed and bottle feed for the first 2 weeks. but now he is just bottle feed enfamil lipil with iron. doctor says we can not change formula because he needs the iron and that it is a myth that iron causes constipation. we took him to the doctor and was told all we could do was give him an ounce of prune juice a day to help him. well the constipation has gone away but he is still very gassy. i hate to see my little man in such pain and discomfort. i am open to any suggestions. thank you D.

What can I do next?

Hi D.! I had the same problem with one of my twin boys. He would cry and cry inconsolably because of his gas. What we eventually did was get some mylicon drops and put them in his bottle at every feeding. I know it doesnt work for everyone, but you CAN see the difference in the bottle...the air bubble just fizz away to nothing. Also, we give him some baby bliss gripe water at night...we buy it at walgreens. It did take a few days for everything to work through and he has been a much happier baby since. Good Luck!

My son who is now 13, had terrible gas as an infant and I breast fed for 2 years. Since we cant blame it on your milk and what you are eating, I would suggest goats milk. I got smart and with my second child when the problem came around, I breast fed but also bottle fed goats milk, it made the world of difference and the tummy pains went away. Soy milk and Infamil were not good for my babies tummies at all. At night I would make a chamomile tea with just water , cooled it down and that helped too. For bad constipation, my health food store in town had herbs and tonics for infants too. you just have to read and check in with your Mommy knowledge and your Dr.

I have found that putting the baby on my knees while I am sitting and bouncing the baby. start face up and pat and rub his tummy after a few min. turn him over and pat and rub his back. after awhile the tooting will begin! keep doing this rotating every so often for however long it takes to get the tooting started! also, make sure that after every feeding you are burping him well, try to get as many burps as possible out.

My twins had gas in the first month. We switched the Enfamil Lipil to Enfamil Gentlease and switched our Gerber bottles to Ventaire. I believe that the Ventaire bottles did the trick because there is significantly less bubbles in the bottle during feeding. We also burped the babies half way through the meal.

Congratulations on your little boy. There could be many reasons he has gas. My son (4 months old) is gassy. He doesn't seem to get upset when he has gas, but that's just him. You may try pumping his legs throughout the day and making sure you burp him really well. Sometimes you just need to love on them until the gas passes because their internal organs are brand new and breast milk & formula are hard on their tummies. I have also heard that flax seed oil and baby jarro-dophilus (www.jarrow.com) works great to help with a baby's intestinal health.

Learn some good infant massage. Also grip water or milycon drops (sorry, I spelled that wrong).

Congrats on your new baby,

My family is from Portugal and I remember my grandma was very old school and used a lot of natural remedies and when I had my first son and he had gas, she told me to make a tea out of chamomile and a tiny bit of Karo syrup and give it to him in a bottle. Well, being a first time mom I thought she was nuts! I was very paranoid about his care and was too scared to try it. But then my mom said she used it on me and finally I asked my peditrician and he said it was fine so I made the tea and it worked! It doesn't have any caffine because you use the herb and just boil it in water, strain it and add a drop of the syrup. Sometimes you don't need a lot of medicinal or new age hype, sometimes the things that work are simple, natural and been used forever.

STOP THE IRON
We used the old fashioned formula before formulas were mass produced.
1 13oz (I think that's the size) condensed milk
17oz. water (boiled)
2 tablespoons light karo syrup...
If the kid gets constipated you can change once for the dark but not more than that or you will have the opposite problem.
There's also a tea we were told to make with fennel seeds use a pot you don't care about because it will turn it green. Put in two tablespoons sugar in a pot of water (1 quart or so) and cover the top with a layer of the fennel seeds. Let it come to a boil then boil for 5 minutes then strain. Refridgerate if you are keeping some onhand I would freeze it if it gets cloudy throw it out it's gone bad.

What bottles are you using??? The best ever are the Dr. Brown's bottles. I have 3 boys.....the first two were Mylicon babies......meaning thats what I would give them to relieve the gas.....it was a pain. The 3rd I did my research and ended up purchasing the Dr. Brown's bottles and they were the miracle I needed. No gas no nothing. Try them I promise you that they are worth every penny. Good luck!

Give him babies magic tea and drink it yourself as well to pass its effects through your milk supply. Your baby will never be constipated nor gassy.

awe poor baby. iron has little to do with because all formula has iron added. with the gas have you tried the milicon drops? or gently pushing his knees to his chest or peddling his legs? as long as the gas is comming out is good. you might have to change formulas again. i used enfamil lipil and had to change to gentlease then had to change to good start and that worked for my daughter! i hope your little one feels better soon!

Mylicon drops helped a ton with my little gassy guy. They are purely functional, not medicine, so you can give them to him frequently without worrying too much.
