GCB - Bada$$ Show About Texas on ABC?

Have you seen it? What do you think? Does it push the racial, spiritual, political, social and regional envelope? How do they get away with some of their jokes? Its so sterotypical but some of the humor is witty and smart.

I'm talking about a new show on ABC called "GCB" - its kind of like Desperate Housewives meets Texas. I started watching out of curiosity, being from Texas and all. The show is hardly "all things Texas" but still, its something silly and fun to watch on Sundays.

What can I do next?

Really Bug? Cuz most of the women I know are exactly like the ones on the show. They are bleached, skinned, glossed, buffed, poofed, and altered beyond what is humanly natural. They sugarcoat everything, are as deep as a dime in a small puddle and like to hide behind Scriptures. They not only own guns but they dang sure know how to lock and load them too. I could go on about how out of touch with reality they are because of their money, big homes, beliefs and traditions, but I don't have time. If it weren't for these women and the drama they bring into my life, I wouldn't go to church most Sundays. When I'm around them I'm a fish out of water, but I love it! But they are women, they are human, they are Christians and they are real nonetheless. I think its a little naive to think women like that don't exist at church. I'm glad I have learned to get along with the GCB's who go to mine. They need ministering too.

But we aren't talkinga about them, we are talking about the show. There are some moments in the show when I'm proud to be a Texan, and other moments where I'm glad its set in Dallas and not my beloved Htown. Again, I do agree the title is sacrilegious, thus my original point - how in the world do they get away with it?

I've lived in Texas for 27 years, and I've never met a single person like that. So...that's pretty much how I feel about the show.

Darn it! I got rid of cable last May! If I had cable I would watch it as I am a former Texas beauty pageant gal!

Well, I have watched it a few times. I'm from Texas and I'm Christian and in no way offended. It's cute, mind fluff. Nothing wrong with that. I don't think they are demonizing or ridiculing people of Faith at all. There is a place for humor and satire, even within people of Faith. People take themselves too seriously!

It doesn't resemble anyone I know or have ever met. It's cartoonish in it's portrayal of Texans. It comes closer to hitting home with the depictions of Evangelicals ( I say that respectfully )

The show reminds me way too much of "Hart of Dixie" I love Hart of Dixie. But it's the same storyline exactly. Small town girl - goes off to the big city and comes home sooo sophisticated and snooty looking down on the small minded, simple townsfolk, only to realize there's more than meets the eye to these simple folk and that she's really a country girl at heart - wait - that's also the storyline to Sweet Home Alabama, and Hope Floats! A tired premise, I suppose.

Sorry, can't get past the name to even watch it. "Good Christian Bitches" is just too offensive for me.

I was born in Texas and raised part of my life there. Hell I plan to be buried there when that time comes. I don't currently live there but close enough to the state line that I can be "home" anytime I want.
I LOVE the show. I have seen women like that in Texas and many other states as well or I should say I have seen Christians like that. For those that claim they haven't seen them well lucky you. It is just a show meant to entertain. Look at a lot of shows on now and you can skew it as attacking or demonizing something or another.
I have seen many a "christian" demonize and ridicule people, things, shows, books and so on. But I guess that is ok cause good christians are doing it??? Not attacking anyone on that..just a line of thought since the show is being called out as one attacking religion.

It's based on a book and the show is hilarious and wonderfully trashy - just enjoy and do not look too far past the surface.

It's on Hulu Plus AND the abc website :)

I find the show disgusting and offensive therefore I don't watch it. I watched it a couple times and decided this. I too have lived in Texas my entire life and the majority of the people here that I've come across are not like how they are protrayed on that show. These shallow people do exist here and everywhere else. The way it mocks the christian faith is a disgrace. Gives more ammunition to those who already think negatively about it. Proves their point, see, they are all hypocritical. It is just a show but some people buy into a show to be the real thing, i.e. shallow people. I don't object to the show being on tv, because I have the choice of either watching it or not and I choose not to. To each their own.

I sat here wondering what on earth GCB stood for (not knowing a thing about this show), so I looked it up. Here's an answer for why they allow the name:

"ABC was contacted by many Christians and Christian organizations for the original title of the series, Good Christian Bitches, who believe the name as well as the show is demeaning toward Christianity, while some advocates for women found it problematic to use the word "bitches" to refer to women. Word of the name change came along with ABC's announcement that it had ordered the series. The series then was renamed to "Good Christian Belles" which appeared in several promos before the final renaming to the initialism "GCB". Several ABC affiliates in Texas and other states in the Bible Belt threatened to not air the show if the name wasn't changed.

Despite being retitled in the U.S., the series will air under its original title, Good Christian Bitches, in Australia and New Zealand on TV2, in Denmark on Kanal 4, and in Sweden on Kanal 5."

I doubt I will be watching the show, to be honest. It sounds far too much like Desperate Housewives, which I wouldn't watch if it were the only thing on TV. Now, Tabatha's Takeover Salon? I'll watch her turn around failing businesses in a heartbeat!

I love that show! Just watched an episode last night (1 of the 2 hours they showed on Monday). I am not from Texas and don't know how accurate it is compared to women there but I think it's really funny. I love Kristen Chenowith and all the women in the show actually! I also like the dynamics of the different relationships - like Cricket's....I am a fan!

Texas born, Texas raised. Nope, don't like the show at all. Putting aside the content (which is very offensive IMO) the acting is pretty pathetic. Desperate Housewives replacement?? No. Not even close! I will be extremely surprised if it makes it.

I just want Pan Am back :( Not a huge fan of it. Not worth staying awake for, but I do love the actors/acresses on the show!
I have to say prior to this show I had never heard of "good christian b5$tchs" as a term. That must be a Texas (or at least a southern) term?

I watched the first two episodes. I have not wasted any more of my time on it since. I found the show very ..... eh just wrong I guess (for lack of a better word). It totally reminded me of Desperate Housewives, and I do not agree with what I saw on that show years ago when I used to watch it.

They get away with this show b/c they don't write "Good Christian Bitches" at the title, simply "GCB" leaving it up to also stand for "Good Christian Belles."

All in all, YES I've seen it. No I didn't like it b/c of the way it makes Texan Christians look. We're not all so manipulative and bending the rules in the Bible. The only part I liked was a few political snips that the red-haired mother said - one about liberals or convervatives, another bit she said where I laughed and thought "ha. so true. I can't believe ABC said such a conservative comment on their network!"

I'm actually watching it right now! I like it. I'm from the North so I don't know if it's offensive to Texans, but I think it's funny. It's no more shocking than Desperate Housewives or any of the other shows on network TV right now.

My friends and I talked about this at our weekly breakfast. Taken in context and knowing the area of Dallas where it takes place, its fine. But, the rest of the country, where they don't know this is actually how people live, can easily be taken out of context and put a bad image on WASP Christians.

I, personally, LOVE the show and think its hilarious. One of my closest friends doesn't think so. She thinks it is detrimental to southern Christians- boosting the stereotype of the dumb, southern, Christian that the rest of the country thinks goes on in the south.
