gDiapers Vs. Disposable Diapers

Hi Mamas,
Once again I could use your advice and your suggestions. We are expecting No. 2 and I came across gDiapers while looking for baby stuff. When our son was born, we originally wanted to try cloth diapering but it simply did not work out. However, almost 5 years later those gDiapers seem to be very promising. I like the fact that I can switch between biodegradable disposable liners and cloth liners, but it almost sounds to good to be true. Do you have any experience with the gDiapers and would you prefer them over disposables? I like the idea of doing something good for our earth considering how the standard disposables end up in the landfills for years and additionally are loaded with chemicals that might not be the best for baby's skin.
Thanks so much for your feedback positive or negative.
C.

I LOVED the concept of the gDiapers, but our toilet kept getting backed up from the part of the insert that doesn't break down in the toilet. They were also EXTREMELY messy and disgusting when there was poop!! You have to dump the poop in the toilet, then somehow pull the tabs and shake out the inside of the insert (the part that breaks down in the toilet). I don't do well with poop like that, so they didn't last very long for me. They also didn't fit my chubby son very well; too many leaks, and you can't double up because then he couldn't walk.

I wish I could find a cloth diaper I actually like and that actually works for me, but I'm a disposable mom!

Hi C.,

I was given a bunch of gDiapers, but do not use them as I had already invested in the diapers I'm describing below. But, if you would like the gDiapers, please write me an email.

I much prefer my BumGenius 3.0 diapers. They are one size fits all with adjustable sizing from newborn to 3yo. But, they are only cloth, they don't have the flexibility to be disposable.

We cloth diaper during the day, and disposable overnight and when traveling. Good luck!

Not to good to be true! I love my gdiapers! I would never consider ever using disposables ever again. I cant honestly understand why anyone would want to make that much trash when there is such a great alternative. And they are sooooo cute! They also have amazing customer service. They will walk you through any issues you are having. Send replacement velcro if you need it. There is a great yahoo group to buy used ones if you want to save some money.
I love, love, love mine!

Also if you do subscribe and save on Amazon the disposable liners are 30% off.

Hi C.,
I use cloth and disposables, depending on what is going on. I did use gdiapers for the cover for a little while, with a cloth insert (before they made their own), and the velcro tabs rubbed my son raw. I covered them with some fleece, but then just had too many leaks to use them. (I ended up giving them away). They are a great idea and may work for other kids. My kids are chubby, so the fit is very specific. I use a combo of prefolds (cheap!) with Thirsties covers, and Bumgenius, which I definitely recommend, and some disposables when we are out a lot or traveling. I used Fuzzibunz with my son, but they wore out really quick and I haven't been able to use them with our daughter. The bumgenius seem to hold up better, elastic-wise. I initially started cloth b/c of the cost savings and earth savings, and they are cheaper than gdiapers. Email me if you have any questions! Good luck!

I've used gDiapers, on and off, with all 3 of my kids. I like them. We have a compost pile in our backyard, and we compost all the wet ones. They really do completely biodegrade! I flush the poopy ones, and our toilet sometimes gets backed up from that.... usually after a few weeks of flushing them. I find I get inspired and use gDiapers exclusively for a month or so, and then I get lazy and revert to disposables, and then feel guilty about all the trash I'm producing and go back to gDiapers. I never did cloth -- my husband absolutely would not go along with that, but he can handle the gDiapers. We're using the same gDiapers I bought for our first baby now with our third, and they're still working great -- the velcro is as strong as ever. Disposables are easier -- you'll never have to rinse out a poopy inner liner with a disposable -- but gDiapers are the most eco-friendly thing I can find that's not cloth. And I find them to be just as reliable as disposables -- they don't leak any more or less.

I am hooked on fuzzi bunz. I did use the gdiapers that a friend gave me for a while but I felt like the inserts were actualy as big as a newborn disposable. The fuzzi bunz are so easy to use and the only thing touching my daughters' "buns" was fleece. She has never had diaper rash either and she is 15 mos old.
