I used Walmart brand - Parents Choice when I needed to supplement with formula. I also was only using Nestle Good Start to begin with. You can go to parentschoiceformula.com and request a sample of the formula.

Hi moms, I'm breastfeeding my son however I'm finding myself in a situation where I have to occasionally supplement his feedings with formula. I'm a fan of Nestle Good Start formula and used it with my daughter a couple of years ago however since I'm not working right now I'm looking at ways to cut back on expenses by purchasing generic or store brand formula. I know that the nutritional factors are the same with generic and store brand as the name brand ones so I'm not worried about that, but just wanted to know if anybody has found one that is most similar to smell/taste to the Good Start formula. I'm not fans of Enfamil or Similac and would rather stay away from items that are like them. Any ideas of brands would be great!!!
Thanks,

we have my 3 month old son on the Publix brand at home and when he is at daycare they give him Good Start. I didn't like enfamil or smiliac for my daughter when she was a baby either--they seemed to be so foamy.
Hi M. - A friend of mine just recently switched from Nestle Good Start to the Publix brand and her twin girls did great with the change. She says the Publix brand formula smells similar to Nestle, but her girls didn't like the Nestle at all. Good luck with your decision.
Generic brands are completely fine. All baby formulas are regulated. Also, I know there are some breastfeeding advocates who will try to dissuade you from using formula...it's YOUR child, do what is best for you! Not everyone is cut out for nursing and it doesn't mean you love your child less if you bottle feed.
If you can try the BJ's brand, my first grandchild was raised on it. She loved it, enfamil gave her constapation and the good start gave her the runs. BJ's Brand was just right.
Before you turn to formula have you found out why you have to supplement? Nursing is all about supply and demand. Please talk to a lactation consultant. Sometimes dr. don't know what they should about breastfeeding. Good luck!
Hi there and congrats on being a breastfeeding mom. I'm not sure about generics but thought you might like to know that there is a breastmilk donation site called Milkshare where you can find moms to donate breastmilk. The milk is always free although you will have to buy the donor's storage bags (not her pump), and will likely want to purchase a countertop pasteurizer. The site is www.milkshare.com.
Good luck!
you didn't mention why you have to supplement? But have you tried to pump your breast milk? It is a bit more time consuming, but SO good for the baby and your wallet! It will also help keep your supply up. If you supplement w/o pumping, it will decrease. Keep that it mind.. you can get 2nd hand pumps if you don't have one, they are sanitary, just replace the tubing etc.. try craigslist or borrow from a friend. Just a thought.. congrats on the new baby! :)
my pedi told me to go on Parents Choice.. its a wal-mart brand... its pretty cheep and both of my kids did GREAT on it! no problems at all! My son us advanced and always grew above norm in all the growth charts.. and my daughter was always off the growth charts with her development. Both of my kids are very smart and always pretty healthy! good luck!Dr.Bartlett with PPC in ft.myers was the dr that told me to use Parents Choice!
I never used Good Start so I don't know the comparison but my daughter drinks Target Up and Up and it's only $11 for the big can. She likes it better than enfamil or similac.
Have you considered pumping the extra you need rather than to supplement with formula? Have you talked to a lactation consultant or Le Leche League for recommendations on increasing supply? You can try taking fenugreek capsules available in the vitamin section, they work well for many moms to really boost milk supply. Also red raspberry leaf tea, coconut milk and even oatmeal do wonders. LOTS of water helps a lot too. I HIGHLY recommend consulting a lactation consultant BEFORE beginning to supplement, as often the start of replacing breastmilk meals with formula meals is the beginning of a downward spiral for breastfeeding success....since you will be feeding less breastmilk, your body will start to make less, then you need to supplement more, and so forth... The more you feed, the more you make....the less you feed or pump, the less your body thinks you need and will reduce production. Your baby is only 1 month and could definately benefit from 6 mo to a year of nursing, especially during the upcoming flu season...
I used Parent Choice the wal-mart brand. Very inexpesive compared to the other brands and my little one took to it fine while I used it also to supplement it during breastfeeding.
Good luck!
When my daughter was in the NICU after birth, I asked one of the doctors if one brand of formula was different than the next and she said no, people just tell you that and it's not true...I've been using Publix brand and it works out great..It's only $17.00 for a week and 1/2 - 2 week supply. It says on the can, compare to Enfamil but whatever...
Parent's Choice from wal-mart was the closest i found. the baby didn't know the difference and at the time it was like 1/2 the cost of name brand. don't know about now since my youngest is 5. but anyway the closest i found was that.
The Target Brand, Up and Up
FIrst I strongly suggest you pump your milk to give to your child instead of any artificial breast milk. Second, Nestle has been known to do many many unethical things. Check out this link to start:

How about the WIC probram? It's great they give you formula .
I have used Parents Choice (Walmart) exclusively for my son. It is the same as the other choices, but at leat half the price ($12.00 for a large can of powder). Definitely worth the savings
Hi M.,
I am a mom to 5 yr old Meghan, 2 yr old Sidney and 7 month old Jayson. I breastfed both of my girls for a year and planned to do the same with my son. When my son was 3 months my milk started to dry up and I was not able to get my supply back. I tried almost every kind of formula and wound up giving him Good Start. Well, like you, I needed to go a little cheaper so I started buying Walmart's brand...Parent's Choice. This works very well for us. Maybe it would be a good one for you.
Good Luck!!
