I have a german shepard that will be two years old at the end of the month. Her name is Kayla and is sweet as can be. First time I have ever bought a dog from a breeder. Kayla was almost four months old when we brought her home. Seemed to be healthy, lord did I know when I got her home she kept having loose stool. Vet checked her for worms she was positive. Got that cleared up, still having the loose stool. Did lots of test come to find out after all the test plus surgery she has EPI and IBS. During her surgery they found her stomach is working against her with everything she eats.
She is on three different meds plus food from the vet. Which none of seem to be helping her. At times she can't hold her bowel movement.
If you would meet her would think nothing is wrong from the way she acts, but if you pet her she is so skinny its so sad.
I am up threw the night anywhere from one to four times a night to let her out plus if my son wakes up. I love her but I just don't know what to do anymore.
I have spoke to many vets and researched the problem and nothing is out there to do different then what I am doing or have tryed.
I having a hard time believe there is nothing out there to help her, friends keep telling me that I should consider putting her down.
If anyone has any suggestions. I would greatly appreciate it. I need HELP!!!
I do have another german shepard, he will be 11 in June. He is very healthy and very active. He is very depentent on the other dog, as if she is his mate.
I lost my other female Kasey it will be two years this july 10. After she passed Rocky my male became VERY depressed had to go on heart meds etc until we brought Kayla home. He then snaped out of it and has been fine since.
Try a gluten free diet. I've known many people that have had sick dogs and no vet knew what to do. Then they researched it and tried changing the diet to what suited their dog more and it became a totally different dog! This can happen with people too!

Homeopathy will work great for your dog. Consider a Holistic Vet, which are a little pricey, but worth it. I may be able to help. I do Homeopathy on people (I'm a Naturopathic Doctor), but I would need a little more information on the symptoms. Also, it sounds like food allergies which is usually the cause of IBS. My sister has a white german shepard who is now 11 who had a similar problem but also sometimes involved her peeing in addition to the runs. She has been on Tylan powder for the pooping and Proin for the peeing for years and it made a huge difference. It was originally prescribed by Dr. Antonici at All Creature Great and Small in Downers Grove.

I am a believer in some holistic medicines, but my dogs are on the BARF diet...Bones And Raw Food...I fix them fresh ground beef and pureed veggies...about 2/3 meat and 1/3 veggies...add a little safflower oil. Go to the meat market and get some soup (beef) bones. They are about 2 or more inches long and maybe 2 or so inches across..give it to him raw..not cooked...keep the little boy away, as sometimes they get a little aggressive with fresh meaty bones. Check out the BARF diet on line. Or go the IlCockerrescue.org and read all about it on that website. If that doesn't work, please don't put the dog down..find a new vet. Where are you located? I'm sorry to hear about the trouble. I wish that I knew the answer, but I don't. I can only suggest to post an ad on Craig's List. I have had several questions about pets and gotten some pretty good feedback. Go to craigslist.com and click on Chicago and then go to pets. The rest is pretty easy to figure out. First of all, I am sorry about your dog and all that you are having to deal with. I'm not sure what EPI is and I really don't have any advice there. However, have you ever considered contacting the veterinary school at University of Illinois in Champagne? They might be able to help you. Also, have you taken her to a specialist for gastrointestinal problems?
I hope you can get some help for your baby. It would be a shame to have to put her down at such a young age.
I don't have any experience with your exact problem....but VCA in Aurora is an excellent vet clinic. They have vets there who specialize in different areas. Our young Yellow Lab had to have surgery on a back leg. We took her there. They even had water therapy for her to help with her recovery. So taking Kayla to VCA would be my next step if she were my dog. Hope this helps.
