My fiance and I are new parents-to-be. I know moms have to go in for a lot of blood tests. I went in for my glucose test and it was high. Now I have to take a three hour test. Has anyone had gestational diabetes? Is our child going to have juvenile diabetes? I am really confused about this and need advice.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We go back to the doctor for a follow up and meet with a 'high risk specialist'. Sitting in a room, he asks us what we are doing. "Well because my blood sugar was so high, the last doctor said we had to see you.", was my reply. He looks over my results, says "I have to make a few calls.", leaves only to come back saying that I don't have gestational diabetes. He says only 1 of my scores was high and you
have to have at least 2. Other doctor was being overly cautious. It made me give up sugar in a hurry. Well not completely...

I had gestational diabetes...My son is perfectly healthy! He was born with APGAR scores of 10, because I really took care of myself after I was diagnosed. I was put on a very bland low sugar diet and I gave myself 2 insulin shots per day. The diabetes disappeared right after he was born. If you take care of yourself and control your sugars, there is really nothing to worry about.

Hi S.-
I had GD, and my son is 2 1/2 and doing fine.
After the baby is born they will check is blood sugar every time he/she eats. I don't remember if it was before or after.
My son was fine. I was told that we will need to keep an eye on his blood sugar, but it doesn't mean that you child is going to have diabetes. You need to keep their weight in check.
You may have a higher chance of getting GD with other pregnancies and you also have a higher chance of getting type 2 when you get "older".

I know it is scary, but it is something that you can control while you are pregnant.
Exercise is great for lowering blood sugar. I walked 2 times a day.
You will also have to watch your intake of carbs. I saw a diatician (sp) who helped.
I also had to check my blood 4 times a day, no picnic, but it does get easier as time goes on.
I then had to call in my numbers to my high risk ob once a week.
My Dr. was afraid that my son was going to be big, something that can happen due to the GD, so they induced me 10 days early. I had a very easy labor and delivery and my son was born at 7.5 lbs. A peanut compared to what I thought he was going to be.

Every situation is different as is every Dr. and patient. I know people who have slightly high numbers after the 3 hour and they just need to watch what they eat, and I know people who had the 3 hour test and everything was ok.

You can also check out diabetes.org. They have a section about GD.

If you have any other questions feel free to send me a message, I also have many recipe and food ideas.

Good Luck to you!

I had GD with only my second pregnancy out of my 4. I controlled it through diet only and my girl was perfectly healthy. It was hard eating through Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years on the diabetic eating plan but I was the healthiest that I ever was.

Good luck and don't worry.

S.,

with all 4 of my pregnancies I failed my first glucose, and passed the 3 hour test. I wouldn't stress too much, but be prepared - the 3 hour test is a fasting test.

Do some searching on google for 'glucose tolerance test', and 'pregnancy induced diabetes'. I was told that my high pregnancy levels puts me at a greater risk for type 2 diabetes later in life, but it seems to kind of run in my family anyway, so i fully expect issues later in life.

good luck, i'm sure it will all work out

Go to webmd and learn more about gestational diabetes.

Gestational diabetes can happen in all types of women - healthy, lean, obese, sedentary, active, etc. The pregnancy hormones interfere with the body's ability to make insulin, not your genes or your lifestyle (although being overweight, inactive, and having a poor diet can contribute to type 2 diabetes).

I took two 3-hour tests. Just make sure you bring a lot of reading material because you'll be there literally for 3 hours. Do it first thing in the morning too, because you'll need to fast. You'll do a blood draw then drink/eat the glucose and have blood draws one, two, and three hours later.

Although I was never formally diagnosed with GD, I was at the highest acceptable level so my doctor wanted me to follow a GD diet. I did that for 2 months, took the 3-hour again, and got the same exact numbers - go figure! On the bright side, my baby was born at 37 weeks, 7 pounds 1 ounce (no macrosmia!), and I delivered vaginally.

Go to reputable websites and read up on GD. You'll really learn a lot.

I failed the regular glucose test with two pregnancies and had to take the three hour test. Both times I passed the 3 hour with flying colors. No gestational diabetes. I know how hard it is to sweat out the results of these tests, but you won't know until you know.

Best of luck to you.

I had the same thing happen. When I went back for my 3 hour test I fasted for over 12 hours to be sure it was accurate and the entire day leading up to it I followed a type 2 diabetes diet. High protein and minimal carbs. When I was pregnant I loved fruit and fruit smoothies. Thinking I was eating healthy but I was putting my body into a sugar high! All that fruit was converting to sugar. The doctor told me to stretch out 5 little meals a day. I would have a pice of fruit only in the morning when your sugar level is the lowest, unless you drink coffee or tea and add sugar to that then you need to cut out the fruit. Each meal needs to have a protein in it. Whether it's meat or natural peanut butter or sugar free jello etc. I increased my veggies and tried to cut out fruits and veggies that were high in sugar content like corn and carrots.
My 3 hour test was fine, but even if yours is not. Don't sweat it. During pregnancy I know Moms can take insulin with no harm to baby. It is when your insulin levels are not monitored that it may become dangerous. Godd Luck and send an update on your results!
