Cari:
Gestational diabetes is more common that you think, it's also call: glucose intolerance. I was diagnosted with GD at week 24. When I heard the word "diabetes" (being pregnat), I was terrified, but my husband and I, did a lot of researches and is nothing that bad. Just relax tomorrow for your 4 hours test, and if is positive, your Dr. will referr you to a endocrinologist, who will give you detailed intructions about how you take your sugar levels, what to eat, what to avoid, etc.
The good thing is that being under control, you will not gain too much weight.
The risk Doctors know, is having GD out of control, will make the baby gain too much weight and the delivery will be hard, and also the baby and you will have more chances to get Diabetes in the future, but if you take good care of it, everything will be great.
The day after my baby was born, my sugar levels were absolutelly normal again. Few days ago, I had my anual check up (my baby is now almost two years) and my sugar levels remain perfect.
Don't worry, it's more common that you and I think, just follow your Dr. instructions and enjoy the rest of your pregnacy. You can find tons of information in the American Diabetes Society (check for their web site), and also in your local library.
Blessings and enjoy this wonderful time.
