Friday I had my glucose screening (27 weeks), and today they called and said that my levels were higher than normal, and that I should come in tomorrow for a 4 hour test! Anyone had gestational diabetes?

What can I do next?

Hi Cari - I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with my twins 3 years ago. My OB had me see a nutritionist and they put me on a specialized diet to control my blood sugar and had me test my blood 4 times a day with a glucose meter. It wasn't too bad. It lowered my blood sugar and helped my babies in the long run. If you need any further advise/support, let me know.....R.

Cari,
With all 4 of mine I had to have a repeat 4 hour test. The second test came back normal-high. All we did was modify my diet and I had NO problems at all- all my babies were fine and healthy.
Relax and enjoy :-)

Hi Cari!

Congratulations on your expectant baby! I also was diagnosed at 27 weeks and did the 4 hour test and then was diagnosed with GD. I had a trouble-free first 26 weeks and exercised religiously 4 to 5 x a week. So, then all of my troubles. Wait until your OB GYN Doc tells you for sure that you have GD and if it is not too bad, you may be able to control it with diet and exercise. This wasn't my case and it is too long to go into it, but just wait and don't work yourself up until you actually know.

Email me at ____@____.com and I can give you some good advice and websites to check things out. Needless to say, I wound up in the hospital with GD, Pre-clampysia, high protein in my urine and a few other things, so .....don't borrow trouble. Trust your instints though and always check with your doc about anything you think is not right!! I have a healthy 3 year old now and he is wonderful!

Good Luck, but don't fret, just wait until they tell you for sure. You may be able to control it with oral medication and insulin shots or you may just need to change your diet.

Email me if you have any other questions!

Cari:

Gestational diabetes is more common that you think, it's also call: glucose intolerance. I was diagnosted with GD at week 24. When I heard the word "diabetes" (being pregnat), I was terrified, but my husband and I, did a lot of researches and is nothing that bad. Just relax tomorrow for your 4 hours test, and if is positive, your Dr. will referr you to a endocrinologist, who will give you detailed intructions about how you take your sugar levels, what to eat, what to avoid, etc.

The good thing is that being under control, you will not gain too much weight.

The risk Doctors know, is having GD out of control, will make the baby gain too much weight and the delivery will be hard, and also the baby and you will have more chances to get Diabetes in the future, but if you take good care of it, everything will be great.

The day after my baby was born, my sugar levels were absolutelly normal again. Few days ago, I had my anual check up (my baby is now almost two years) and my sugar levels remain perfect.

Don't worry, it's more common that you and I think, just follow your Dr. instructions and enjoy the rest of your pregnacy. You can find tons of information in the American Diabetes Society (check for their web site), and also in your local library.

Blessings and enjoy this wonderful time.

A friend of mine just failed her 1 hour test and goes today for the 3 hour!

I had GD, and it wasn't that bad. Like the others said, I was on a special diabetic diet - which actually was good for me because it made sure I ate right! I checked my sugars in the morning and after every meal, and wrote it down for the dr. to see. After a month, I was controlling it just fine and the dr. had me go down to 2 checks a day, and then my last month I was just checking in the morning.

I was so upset at first, but it's really no big deal unless it's really out of control and you have to take insulin. And even then, lots of women still do just fine.

If you want more info, feel free to email me.

But like a pp said, don't borrow trouble - just wait and see, you'll most likely pass your next glucose test!
