Gestational Diabetes, Would This Be Ok?

Ok, 1st and foremost mamapedia needs an app to make getting to it n checking things a lot easier. That being said, I had my 3 hour sugar test done today and as I suspected all the draws came back high, I had it with my 2 year old. I remember the levels to have it under when I wake up and 2 hours after I eat and all that good stuff. The difference between 2 years ago and now is I have to keep my job. Last time it worked out I was able to take off work have him and go to school and use my money from that, this time I can't I'm going to have to stay at work as long as possible. My question is with the fact I have to work as long as possible what if I can't get an appt on days I'm already taking off for other spots? Would it be ok if I kept an eye on things myself and if anything got out of hand then go to the specialist? I can't afford to take any extra time off work than I already am. And I'm not saying I'm not going to do anything or ignore this but I was able to manage it last time with diet high protein/low carb. I've been trying to do that this time, but don't always work out that way. Would it be ok for me to wait to see the specialist unless I can't keep things under control. Oh and btw I'm 32 weeks pregnant and have never made it after 37 weeks, one was induced due to preeclampsia the other 2 came at 37 weeks on their own.

**edit** with my last one I had to see some nutritional specialist as well as a Dr to download my sugar tests off my meter. Happened every few weeks but it was a pain because they are picky about appt times with gd. And I like the idea of flex time, I work 930-630 as it is with o.t. as mandated. I work in a call center, we have been on mandated o.t. that last 2 weeks with 30 min lunches already and due to the 2 year old I can't go in any earlier, but makes me wonder if they will allow longer o.t. I also could use snack ideas for a place that generally only allows hard candy on the call floor. It's a call center so something where I can have small bites and little/no mess.

What can I do next?

I'm a little confused. I had GD, which was diagnosed early on in the pregnancy. Other than meeting with a nutritionist once, there we no specialist. I followed a diet, check my blood sugar levels several times a day, and met with my OB on a regular basis. Towards the end of the pregnancy I did need to have an extra ultrasound.

So I guess the answer to your question is, if everything is going ok and you are able to manage your blood sugar on your own then do so. However, the health of your baby is what matters more than anything else and that has to be top priority.

If you've dealt with this before and you:
Have and know how to use a glucometer
Know how to eat for GD
Are able to keep your blood sugar under control with diet and exercise
then I think self care is fine. I'd keep a log of your readings though. Pregnancy brain might make it hard to remember how things were going a week or two ago when you get to a doctor's appt!

I dont see any reason that you need to go through the diabetes education portion again when you already had it. Just test and call in your numbers. If they are high, then you will go on insulin. Keep in mind, diabetes is something that gets worse with each pregnancy, so its likely you may need the insulin his time. I would call the diabetes nurse and explain that you dont need the education again and go from there.

I had GD with my daughter. Other than the initial meeting w/ the nutritionist (learned how to ck my numbers and plan my meals) I just went to my regular doctor and had normal appointments. I didn't have to go to anyone else except once they determined I needed to have insulin (she had to show me how to do the shot etc).

Talk to your doctor to be sure of what is best for you and the baby.

I had GD with my first baby, and after the initial meeting with the specialist (who gave me my meter and showed me how to use everything), I just faxed in my "blood sugar logs." I didn't have to go in again. Check with your OB/specialist and see if you can do the same....

In my opinion this is too important to try to manage on your own. Talk to your boss and ask for some flex-time. Maybe coming in a half hour early or taking a shorter lunch or working a little later on days you don't have a doctor appointment. Then talk to the staff at your docror's office and ask if you can be the last appointment of the day.
