I work for the American Diabetes Association and urge you to check out our Web site www.diabetes.org for great information about gestational diabetes and diabetes in general. Unfortunately, women who have gestational diabetes, and then go on to have large babies, over 9 lbs., are 40% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes later in life. I have type 2 all over my family and also had a big baby girl 2 years ago, so I know what you're dealing with! Please write me more if you need more info about anything diabetes-related. Also, the Web site I mentioned above has great recipes of the day!

Good luck, please control it now... SO much easier than to do it later when you have it!

This is my work every day, I'm happy to help in any way I can!

K.

I don't have any recipes, but I work for an acupuncturist who specialises in gynacolagy, and she has worked with a couple of women with gestational diabetes. She has had a lot of success, if you are interested, her name is Dr Malhotra, ###-###-####

Hi C.,

Go pick up a book on the Glycemic index or google it. You can control any type of diabetes with this diet. My mom controlled my father's diabetes all his life and I am now controlling it with diet through a feeding tube in the Nursing Home. I also had my gestational diabetes under control as well. (Simple emergency remedy is if your sugar gets extremely high, immediately eating protein will bring it down within 5 or 10 minutes.)

The medical community has given it a thumbs up and a thumbs down but I personally know it works. Also make sure your prenatal vitamin is being absorbed. Lack of absorption of those nutrients can trick you into believing you are getting everything you need. (Liquid and fructose compounded ones absorb best).

Feel free to ask if you want more specific information. I'm always willing to help!

I researched this for my friend and found LOTS of great recipes when I searched under google with the phrase.."gestational diabetes". This brings up many websites with information about the condition and almost all had recipe ideas that were practical and sounded delicious. Good luck with the remainder of your pregnancy, you are almost there!

Hi C.,

Here are some of the things I ate when I had gestational diabetes:
BREAKFAST
- corn tortillas with cheese melted on them (filling, low carb)
- scrambled eggs

LUNCH/DINNER
- make a regular meal for the family (chicken/fish, veggies, pasta or rice) and just don't eat the starch, but double up on the vegetables
- hearty stews like chili or beef stew (no potatoes)
- I never tried brown rice when I had GD, but you might want to experiment by eating some then testing your blood sugar - your body processes it much more slowly than white rice

SNACKS
- fruit
- nuts

You might not always be able to make the same meal for yourself and the rest of the family, but the upside is that everyone will probably end up eating a much healthier diet.

All the best,
J.

you have to eat separate food. There is no way you can all eat the same exact things and control your blood sugar with diet alone.
