Getting a Haircut for a 10 Month Old

I have a 10 month old son who needs his first haircut. I'm debating between doing it myself or taking him somewhere. Does anyone have any recommendations, either on how to do it myself, or where to take him? He just needs the flyaways on the sides, and the baby mullet in the back, trimmed off.

What can I do next?

I would go for a professional cut - I didn't trust myself with scissors near my sons face once he was 9 months. Kids Hair has multiple location in the Twin Cities and lots of great distractions for the kids, and stylists who are used to dealing with infants and toddlers. My son, who is 20 months, has been there 5 or 6 times already. Remember to take his favorite snacks and some small toys he can play with in the chair.

Kids Hair(there are lots of locations) is always fantastic. Even my very anxious son is very relaxed when he gets his haircut there.

If you don't mind going to Highland Park, St. Paul, there is a Kids Hair salon which is all set up for children. Every child I know on this side of town goes there and loves it.

I take all my kids to Dana at Kids Hair in Edina. She does a great job and was wonderful about leaving my son's hair longer--I didn't want him to have a 'big boy' haircut while he was still my little baby boy! My son loves it there because he gets a sucker and a chance to watch Elmo!

If you've never cut hair before I would take him in somewhere. If you have cut hair and are confident in doing so then go for it and try it.

My son had so much hair that I had to cut it 4x before his first birthday. Yes, I did it myself and it didn't look very good. My mom friends teased me to the point where I finally took their advice and paid for Kid's Hair to cut it. He looked sooo good! So, yes, I've been taking him to Kid's Hair several times a year (it still grows really fast!). I've gone to the Edina, Savage, Eden Prairie and Apple Valley locations. It depends where I'm running errands that day. My favorite is the Savage location.

The kids' hair places are good for keeping the kids distracted and they are used to dealing with kids, but all of my experiences have been that they have done a terrible job cutting hair. They don't seem to listen and always cut off too much hair. Luckily I have a friend that is a hair dresser. I did buy a small scissors at Target for those in between times when the bangs and back like you said needs a trim. Since your son is so little get some help from someone else to play with him and hold his head if you need. My sister in law and I did our kids together. We put the kids one by one on the bathroom counter. One of us would hold them and one would cut. We also covered them with a towel so the hair wouldn't tickle them. It really is pretty easy if you are just doing some trimming.
