Getting Musty Smell Out of Car

A gallon jug of water sprung a leak and half of it spilled in the back of my SUV before I realized it, and now there is an awful musty smell. I am trying to leave the windows open as much as possible, but I do not have a garage and with all the rain lately that could lead to more problems. Does anyone know of any products that can help get rid of that smell?

You can get a product from melaleuca (I am a consultant) which you spray and it gets EVERY smell and bacterial remnants out, promise. I use it all the time when we have an accident with pee (on my daughter's rug) or if we've flooded in our basement carpets and it kills the bacteria all together. Its great for other things too but if you're interested I can give you a more thorough list. By the way, its toxin and chemical free so you don't have to worry about inhaling poisons in the process.

If you don't want to pour out baking soda onto the wet spot (because that can get pretty messy) you can get one of those "flow-through" boxes that they sell for keeping in your refridgerator and just put it in the back of your car for a while and it should help with the smell. I had my car shampooed on New Years Eve once and it didn't dry out and then it was so cold that it got all musty smelling and the box of baking soda really helped.

Hi J.,

I would try Febreeze or Oust. Both are excellent odor removers. Best wishes!

If the area is still damp,I would put backing soda on it. Alot of baking soda. It soakes up the moisture to eliminate the dampness. My dog will have a accident from time to time on a rug and I will pour baking soda on it - let is sit for a day and vacumm it up. It eliminates the wet and the smell. Hope this helps.

I second the baking soda method. You can always hang a dryer sheet in the back, or next to a vent until it's all dried up and smelling better.

Vinegar. I had a horrible stale cigarette smell in my newly purchased "used" car. It was horrible. I tried everything to get it out and then I left a cup of vinegar in my car for a few hours and it definately did the trick. It did smell like vinegar for awhile (but in my opinion, that was better than stale smoke) but after leaving my windows down for a while, the vinegar smell eventually disappeared.

My window leaks from me getting into my car when i frequently lock my keys in there. I end up with a puddle.
1. Dry the carpet as well as you can with a towel. Scrub well.
2. Pour hydrogen peroxide (from the drug store .50 a bottle)
on the spot where the smell is. (It'll be wet again, thats ok.)
Just damp, not soaked.
3. Mop up the peroxide with a towel scribbing up as much as possible.
4. If you can't leave it closed up on a really hot day until it dries, use a blow drier.
It should dry odor free.

I got an email on all the things peroxide can do! It was AMAZING!

If that doesn't work, and it should, theres a product called Quick & bright that gets out stains and smells. It comes in a paste that you melt in the microwave and add hot water to. You put it in a spray bottle. Its particularly good on carpet stains. They carry it at the "As seen on TV store" across from VonMaurs in Yorktown inside the mall.
