Getting My Kids to Go from the Bottle to a Sippy Cup.....

I am having trouble getting my 16 month old daughters off of bottles and onto taking sippy cups. Their Dr. said she wanted us to have them off of them at a year old, and so far I haven't accomplished it. They eat their baby-food and finger foods perfectly but refuse to drink out of anything else. Right now they are drinking with the medium flow nipples, we've tried using the fast flow nipples, but either they won't drink it at all, or get 90% all over themselves. So I was wondering if anyone has any advice? Maybe on a good brand/style of sippy cup to make the transition smoother, and out of curiousity what age do most people try to get their children off of bottles? Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Beth

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all of the advice. I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back with everyone. We've had company out from New York so we've been busy. I am going to start Jan. 1st on the sippy cups. I promise to let you all know how it goes. I think I'm going to start with the nuby cups and a bottle at bedtime for a couple of weeks like some suggested. Cross your fingers for me. Again thanks so much.

Hey Beth!
I started my daughter on a sippy cup at 6 months, the soft topped ones, like a bottle. Then moved on to the harder topped ones, after three months and then only a bottle at night. On her birthday, that was her last bottle. My advice, since the girls are still drinking with bottles, put water in the bottles. Give them the juice or milk in the sippy and the water in the bottle. They will soon find out which one they like better! Good luck and email me when you have extra time!

NUBY, NUBY, NUBY! Thats all I have to say. I had the same problem as you. I went on here and asked the same question the response I recieved was Nuby. I went out bought a couple viola! Good luck! My son was around 1years old when I switched.

I whole heartedly agree with the Nuby cups. My Son was very resistant to the sippy cup. At my doctors advice I took all his bottles away and just offered standard sippy's... he didn't drink a thing for a day and a half. I've found the Nuby brand works wonders! He's 13 months now, and will drink from a hard plastic spouted cup about once a day, we're slowly increasing it little by little... but I think without the other cups, he'd still be on the bottle.

You could try a sippy cup by Nuby. They have a soft lid like a bottle, but with the spout You can get them at Walmart and not sure where else. Good luck.

I have to agree, NUBY NUBY NUBY. They make some really neat transition cups. My son loved them. Also, I found them really cheap at the Burlington Coat Factory (in the baby section).

But if they don't get off the bottle in time for what the doctor says, don't worry about it. Let them go at their own pace. Taking a bottle after 1 never killed anybody. Besides, in nature you could probably breast-feed until their 5. So, just do what's right for you & your baby.

Happy New Year

I run a daycare and I usually get my kids off the bottle by 12months. I just start giving them a sippy cup and they use it. I also have taken care of special need children and in some instances have used NUBY brand cups. They come with a nipple and a soft sippy type top. It helps them transition easier. Then I offer the harder cups and they usually are ok with them. Put all your bottles away and start with the Nuby cups, some come with handles to. Also get away from giving them one at bedtime it will help.

I took the bottle away at 1 year (which is what my doctor recommended) and gave my son a sippy cup-- I knew he could drink out of it. It took a couple days before he would really drink alot. At 16 mos your daughters are physically capable of drinking out of a sippy cup. I would just take the bottles away. The nubby cups are a good transition they have a soft top, similiar to the feel of a nipple. You can get them anywhere.

The kind that we used were the Nuby brand with the wide mouths and handles. Walmart and Kmart were the only stores that carried them, but I think Babies 'R Us does now too. They have a soft nipple and were great. After about 6 months of using those, my daughter will now drink from a regular sippy cup as well!

I agree with the other Mom that said take the bottle away throughout the day. It will be less traumatic for her. My son really had no problem transitoning to sippy cups and now we are mastering table food (he has texture issues). But only let her have them in the morning and bedtime. Then start like a week later taking the morning one away, and so on and so forth. Good Luck!

Hi B.,
How do they drink at meals? If they use bottles at the table I would recommend stopping that. Start by using cups at meal times and only use bottles for bed. After a couple of weeks of that I would get rid of bottles all together. When I had my first son I felt so bad about taking the bottle away. He had no problems. It was worse for me than him. It took about 2 days and he was fine. I used Avent cups to start. They are easy for the kids to hold. My second son is 11 months and is eating all table food and only has bottles when he wakes up and goes to bed at night. Start a new routine for bedtimes instead of bottles. I rock my son and read him a book and when he turns one I will exchange the bottle for a sippy cup. Good luck,
Chris
