Getting My Son to Wear Glasses

I remember when I needed glasses when I was a kid. My mother picked out the frames and I hated wearing them. It wasn't until I needed a new pair that she allowed me to pick out a new frame. I took a friend with me and we picked out a pair together, so I felt that they were stylish and I had an outside opinion besides my mother. Your son may be teased, he just doesn't want to tell you or maybe he just doesn't like the frames. Kids at that age are trying to assert their independence and don't like to talk to their parents about anything, even if the parents can help. Luckily, my eyes corrected themselves, and I don't need to wear glasses now.

By chance, have you tried maybe a bit of psychology. Possibly telling him that if his eyes don't improve by wearing his glasses that he won't be able to get his license at 16 because he needs to pass the eye exam.

Also, could he wear contacts? It's an option he might be open to.

let him pick his own glasses. get a second opinion on eye sight. my son was told he needed glasses at 4 and I got a second opinion and he did not need them. Ask the teacher for input since she sees him in learning center.

I read Cathy's response and I know that the 16 yr old thing is true. My husband is a professional driver and does stunts/trick driving and also driver training for the instructors of Police dept. and Fire Depts. He has commendations from the Secret Service for his driving. I can tell you that he is blind without his glasses and he went through what your son did. His mom tried everything but it finally came to a head at 13. He just wanted to be a great driver someday and that was enough. He found that if he didn't wear his glasses, he wouldn't be able to do what he wanted and learn what he needed for that dream to be a reality. Clark Kent wore glasses, that is why he had X-ray vision... UM that may not be true. Anyway, I think for my husband it was a stubborn thing. He won't be pushed...just gently reminded. It is hard to let kids have experiences and not be able to force them to obey. That is an age old struggle for parents since the beginning of time. My advice, take it or leave it, is to let him find out for himself. He isn't in real danger without them at school, just uncomfortable. Unless it "seems" like his idea-- like taking him dirtbike riding or something that requires glasses that he would enjoy. Make it a habit to let him know you love him regardless of weather he wears his glasses or not-- which I am sure you already do. Good luck!

Would contacts be an option for him? They are not as expensive as they used to be and as long as he is responsible, perhaps it's time to give it a try.
