Getting over a Cold and Teething, Won't Eat or Stop Crying

And YES, we went to the dr. yesterday and he checked her ears and no infection. She's 11 1/2 months old. During the first 3 days of her cold/cough, she had a fever but still ate normally (solids and combined formula and breastmilk). Yesterday and today, she won't eat or drink anything (she CAN breathe through her nose, though it is a little stuffy). Her cold is getting better (no fever, less coughing), but today she just won't stop crying. I can distract her for brief periods with toys, etc, but then she goes back to crying again. She is getting her second top tooth (she's a late teether), it's clearly visible through the gum, but she never really fussed at all for any of the first 3 teeth. I've given her teething tablets and tylenol, they don't help. I swear it seems like she's HUNGRY! And crying because of hunger but she won't eat any solids except a couple of cheerios and won't drink juice or formula from a bottle (not that she ever drinks a lot of anything, or ever has) and won't breastfeed for more than 30 seconds. Could this be cold, teething, or both?

What can I do next?

Give her a little infant Motrin. Always makes/made my babies feel better enough to eat- whether it's a cold or teething. Motrin is better than Tylenol, as it lasts longer!

Motrin is better for teething than tylenol because its an anti-inflamatory. Plus, motrin and tylenol are different medicines and you can alternate then every 4 hrs.

What about a popsicle or frozen wash cloth?

Also, its possible that an ear infection could be developing. I know you said you took her today but there have been times my son didn't have an ear infection when the dr checked, but then a couple days later it was there.

Could be an ear infection

Edited: my niece went from not having an ear infection at a doctors appointment to being at the er 6 hours later getting treated for one. Just because she did not have one yesterday does not mean that there isn't one brewing

Try and offer her something cold like a fruit pop sickle or frozen fruit like cut up grapes or oranges and some crackers.
Also I would give some children Ibuprofen. It seems to help better with pain and lasts longer too. Just make sure she has a little something in her tummy before she takes it.
I know some doctors swear that they don't have "cold" like symptoms when they teeth but my both did with a low grade fever too. Especially when they were cutting the back teeth.
Let her take a long nice bath tonight and give some extra cuddles and hopefully the Ibuprofen will kick in for bedtime.
Best Regards,
C.

Have you tried the Hylands teething tablets? They worked wonders for out daughter. (What kind did you use?) What about Orajel?

Another thought is try bringing her to a chiropractor. We tend to have our kids adjusted ANY time they start coming down with something. Just helps their body fight stuff off better. And making sure she is in alignment will only make her more comfortable too.

Have you tried giving her a popsicle? What about baby orajel?

Count her wet diapers. Watch for dehydration. If she doesn't have at least 3 wet diapers in 24h, call your dr.

Try Motrin, and something cold to drink that she can chew on- our son really likes cold water from a glass cub. He can sip the water and chew on the nice hard, and cold, glass cup. You can also rub whisky on her gums, that will numb them for 15 minutes, hopefully enough to get some food in her!

Definately have a doc recheck. I am going thru this right now with my 1 year old DS. He's never been sick before this...and same issues...fever for a few days, a cough started up, first visit ears looked "fine" (I have a hard time believing that because he was holding his hand over his ear, but...whatever). Less than 2 days later, the fever spiked again, he was inconsolable and completely miserable. Back at the peds...he had such a severe ear infection that his ear drum perforated. OUCH! He too is teething, but his behavior was WAY worse than teething pain, and now we know why. Actually headed back to peds today because he now has a rash from his antibiotic...I'm sick of that place! Hope your little one feels better soon!

breastmilk by eyedropper into her nose. She wont like it but it works! Also for the teething, you can try just single Chammomillia, If you give the teething tablets or the single remedy a different way, it could work better. Take 3-5 pellets, dissolve in 4-6 oz of water. Drop from the cap into the water. Let them dissolve. Give from a plastic spoon every 15 mins for an hour. No food 20 mins on either side of giving the remedy. Wait an hour and repeat an hour. See if this works better.
