Getting Rid of Pets

I just went through something similar with one of my dogs. I actually used my local Freecycle board. I got a lot of replies and carefully read each one. I narrowed it soen to a few and sent these peole emails asking questions and want to know more about them, their family, etc. One lady just really stuck out from the others. I now know that my little furry one is in a great home with lots of love. She sends me pictures of her and we have an open invitation to go visit any time we want. The pictures and stories she emails me has made the transistion for my girls a lot easier.

Freecycle is a good idea. Otherwise I would put an ad in your local paper. Give lots of details and ask for money - enough to make them think about whether they really want the cats. Then interview the people who call until you find someone you have a good feeling about.

For the kids - that's a tough one - maybe make sure the new owner will send pictures a few times and/or write about how they are doing.

There is a website called freecycle.org that I listed my dog on. Just find your county or surrounding counties and put a post up for your cats. When we got rid of our dog we sat down with our kids and told them that we needed to find a different home for her and told them the reasons why I also let me kids help pick the family we gave her to.

What kind of cats are these? Are they full grown? How old are they? House cats / outdoor cats? What goes along with the cats? (This to me is important too since they will be going to a strange place to live at first. Any familulor items to the cats for comfort would be great to them. Food, dishes, toys, scratching post, bedding, collor / leash, pet taxi / pet carrier, vet records....)

Cats are different from dogs. They seem to beable to take care of them self bettter on their own then a dog. Cats usally will do fine no matter where they may go or be.

Some pet stores like Petsmart or Petco will have bulletin boards that you can post a message. You can just put up a little post saying you are looking for a good home for your cats. I have heard it reccomended that you ask a small fee. I am sure you would be willing to give them up for free if it meant they go to a good home. But what I have heard is if you charge a small fee like even $10 you will get more serious calls. Those who use pets for bad things would rather just take a free animal off someone's hands then pay the 10 bucks. Good luck!
