I have no idea how much American Girl dolls are ( I have a son) but I know 5yr old girls LOVE them! If she already has one, you could get her some doll clothes and accessories.
My daughter loves to dress up in play dresses. She has a trunk that came with a fairy costume, a princess costume, and a ballet-dancer costume. It also came with 2 tiarras, clip on earrings, a wand, ballet slippers, 3 or 4 necklaces, and bracelets. My mother bought it for her at Sam's club- unfortunately you can't use the website unless you're a member. If you are a member though, you can check it out, if you are interested.

My girlie girl daughter suggested Justice. It's a clothing store for girls only. You can usually get a 40% off coupon if you look around on the internet. Their clothing is expensive, but fashionable and well made (ie. launders well and lasts and is usually good enough for hand me downs).
-A silver bracelet w/a charm of her initial (can get this at Wal-Mart, Target or Amazon.com....silver is cheaper).
-little girl high heels (can get the anywhere)
-cheerleader pom-poms (dollar store)
-t-shirt personalized w/iron letters (you can buy these inexpensively at Wal-mart...have it say whatever you want
-jewelry box
-piggy bank w/$20 inside
-cute little girlie heart pillow
-they have make-your-own beaded jewelry sets

How about a jewelry box (pottery barn kids has a beautiful one). Or a friendship bracelet kit (amazon has a good one). Puppets are also cool or a doctor's outfit. You can also do a dress up kits with princess dresses and shoes. Good luck.
Things Remembered has beautiful stuff that you can personalize, in that price range. They have them in every mall or you can look online and order from there, but I think you'd have to pay shipping. I have a 4 yo and 5 yo girl, they love things like crystal snow globes that make music or a musical jewlery box.
Give her a framed picture of you and her grandma when you two were young girls and a nice charm bracelet with a starter charm that is meaningful to you, her grandma, her mom and her.
