My girlfriend recently gave birth to her second son. Since her first is almost 2, I know she has almost everything she needs for her newborn, save pacifiers, diapers, etc. What do you recommend as a nice gift?
Send over a couple of frozen dinners. A casserole or lasagna maybe. With a two year old and a newborn - who has time to cook....
My sister-in-law just had her 4th child in February. She had everything she needed then some. So we got her 12 meals at Supper Thyme USA. It is one of those place where you make the meals in about 2 hours then freeze until ready to use. She has said that it was the best gift she's ever got. They were both really busy the first few weeks and it was nice to just pull one of the meals out a few times a week and not have to worry about what to feed the kids. The also offer 6 or 8 meal options. There are several other companies that are the same concept if there is no Supper Thyme USA in your area.
Whenever I am in doubt of what to give as a gift, I always give savings bonds. It may not be as appropriate for a new born. It depends on how you feel about it. A nice gift basket of lotions, powders, diapers would also do quite nicely. Or maybe a small basket of those things and a lower denomination savings bonds. Just an idea. Another thing I have done is get a gift card to a photo studio to have the baby's (or baby and mama)pictures taken. It's kind of hard to suggest since I don't know her. But, I hope this may at least churn a few ideas in your head. Good luck!
I recommend a Big Brother book.
I'm currently pregant with a 9 and 3 year old. My 3 year old loves reading his big brother book. We read it over and over together, and he really gets into it.
The book we have tells him things like: when baby's cry and we have to figure out why, that big brothers have to ask before holding the baby, and things of this nature. It also stresses the possitives of being big, like he gets to eat pizza and ice cream, play at the park, etc. which he can do because he's big (but the baby cann't).

I'm a very practical person so if it were me, I'd enjoy getting the diapers, wipes,or a gift card. Books are a great idea also! You could even throw in something special for her. Try and determine what her personality would appreciate more.
I would suggedt a nice collection of childrens books, or a gift card to somewhere like Borders.
I see you posted this a little while ago, but if you are looking for a nice gift, get the mom a pedicure or a massage. I had two sons close together and people broght over all these clothes and hardly any of them were used. I would have loved if someone brought something for me instead, I really could have used it. get her one of those bank credit cards that can be spent anywhere for anything, those are really neat and take over a pizza and movie...
How about books? Maybe a couple of the oldies that you enjoyed as a child. Or maybe gift certificates to a baby store. I know gift certificates aren't real personal, but then she could use them for diapers, formula, or anything else that she needs or wanted to buy but couldn't justify spending the money for.
hmmm....what about something for MOMMY? Maybe a gift certificate to the salon for a pedi or mani or something like that :) I know that i would definitely appreciate something like that. Sometimes the baby gifts can get a little out of control and you have tooo much stuff for baby. Mommy needs a prize too ;)
