Get him a baseball and a card that explains he has another gift coming. I might try harder if it was my own kid and it was all tlhey asked for but unless he is getting nothing else don't worry about it being late.
We ordered a baseball beanbag chair for my 9 year old nephew for Christmas the other day. (yeah I know to late) Paid the extra shipping. They said it would be here today. So this morning I get an email saying SURPRISE... It's not coming until next week!!! Does anyone know WHERE we can get one in the ST Paul area or CLOSE that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?????

Maybe the company ran out of stock; I hope they'll refund your extra-shipping fee.
In any event, if it were me, I'd write a cute Christmas-decorated note and put it, with perhaps something little and sports-related (a back-pack pull?), into a small box. The note would say, "Please be patient, and you'll receive a bigger surprise before New Year's Day." (You might privately let the parents know what happened so they won't wonder.)
Somehow children enjoy their gifts whenever they arrive!
This happened to me last year. My inlaws wrapped a picture of the gift I would be receiving that had also gotten delayed in the mail, and they had something small for me to open too.
If you can't cancel your order and get your money back, or find one in the area, do what they did. He will still be excited and looking forward to it.
Have you tried the Wal Mart in your area or called the JC Penneys?
They are both showing it is something they usually have in the stores.
If not, I agree to give him a baseball and tell him a "giant one" will be here next week for him.
There have been a few years I had been contacted that items would be late, but they got here in time!
Sears shows that if you order it online you can pick it up in the store. You could call the local one and ask about this to be sure of getting it ASAP?

We had planned on giving out little guy a bike for his birthday on the 7th but I accidentally got the wrong size and Walmart with not exchange or refund on bikes, once they go out the door they are non returnable. I even went over the store manager's head to Bentonville and was told the same thing.
So, we traded bikes with someone giving one for Christmas and now have the right size for Christmas.
I saw some at Big Lots in Maple Grove a couple of weeks ago. I'm not sure if there are any Big Lots closer to St Paul but it might be worth a few phone calls to see if any close to you have one. I think they were $14. Good luck and Merry Christmas!
When a gift goes awry, you don't necessarily need to replace it. Just take a picture of it and wrap it for your nephew to put under the tree. He'll have something to look forward to, waiting for the actual chair to arrive in the mail.
That happened to me last year and I had to move to plan B and give it to him for Valentines day!! :)
