Gift Ideas for Daughter Turning 6? - Arlington Heights,IL

Any thoughts on birthday gift ideas? We're moving and I'm tired of the endless toy parade. Even though I rotate the toy supply, it seems like the "thrill is gone" after such a short period of time. I'm thinking of getting her a Learning Store gift card and taking her for some one-on-one shopping.

What can I do next?

I have a six year old daughter and one Christmas gift she plays with all the time is MagnaTiles. They are geometric shaped, thin blocks with magnets inside. She builds malls and houses for her sister's Little People. You can build in so many different ways compared with regular blocks. I have fun playing too! They are safe to have around younger kids and great for Math skills. I was a kindergarten teacher and I had them in my classroom. All my kids loved them! I bought mine on Ebay. I know they're somewhat hard to find.

another great gift idea for a 6 year old is one of those powerwheels things, we have 2 of them from when our girls were little, and when my neices or friend's kids come over, its a favorite.

My daugeter turned 6 last week. We have a large extended family, so toys are plentiful. Sometimes I think I live in a toy store - haha.

This year, we bought her a Leapster. There are so many educational games out there for it. She loves it! For the first couple of days she didn't put it down. Another idea would be a day at American Girl. We did that last year for her birthday. She got the doll that looks like her & an outfit for it. We also did the lunch. She looks forward to going back each year for a new outfit.

Good luck to you & Happy Birthday to your little one!

I think a mommy/daughter day would be wonderful. The only other thing I can think of... maybe get her ears pierced?

We just bought our daughter a Beta fish for her birthday. Something to care for and take care of.

My daughter is 6 and she loves art, so her favorite things are her easel (which has a white board on one side, chalk board on the other and roll of paper to pull down), glittery markers and crayons, a sketch pad, a journal to write about her day or draw in (it's just a notebook, but she has a diary she loves too that has Tinkerbell and a matching ink pen!)
For toys, she still likes to play kitchen and we got her a new toy kitchen set-up for Christmas since her old one was falling apart. She likes the veggies that are held together with velcro that you can "chop" apart on the pretend cutting board with the plastic knife.
She also loves: her gardening gloves, sidewalk chalk, jump-rope, hopscotch, those little plastic horseshoe games, and is really getting into easy chapter books.
For Easter we gave her her own little pack of various colored nail polish that was scented (I have it in my possesion, but she knows it's "hers", some nice bows and hairbands for her hair, some manicure items like a nail scrub brush and emery boards since she wants to grow out her nails, etc. personal care items and accessories that were cute or fun- cute socks and belts, etc.
She also is starting to LOVE clothes- and wants a cute new swimsuit with one of the wraps/sarongs and some new sandals.

Just some ideas to get you going... I think shopping with her is great, but maybe you should wrap something or at least surprise her with balloons and a cake- part of the fun of birthdays/holidays is the surprise factor. I found this out at Christmas when I gave my god-daughters (6 and 7 yrs) Children's Place cards- they LOVE LOVE LOVE clothes and I thought they'd be thrilled, but they cried because they wanted me to pick something out for them that was special and because they didn't have a "real" gift to open. Next year I'll know better :(

My 2C!

J.,

The idea you mentioned is the best I could suggest. Get her a gift card and take her for a special shopping day - just you two. I've been doing this for my younger (15 y/o) sister since I can remember. We go to lunch, the mall and just spend a "sister-day" together. She looks so forward to it every year.

I think the mommy daughter day is a wonderful idea. I would add in baloons, cake, pizza or whatever for a family celebration with a couple of gifts to open. Clothes and accessories would be a good, non-toy choice. And then, what about getting your nails done together to take a break in your shopping day. My sister has been taking my nieces to get there nails done for a special treat ever since they were 5 or 6.
