My 10 year old son has a friend who is moving far away. He would like to give his friend a gift as a rememberance of the times they shared. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

My son's best friend moved several states away. Distance doesn't have to mean the end of the friendship or the end of shared times.

If they both have computer and internet access, what about a set of web cameras and microphone headsets? Then they can communicate via Skype or similar. If they do Minecraft or other online games, they can play together and talk to each other while playing.

I was going to suggest some personified stationary and self addressed stamped envelopes and some cool pens that maybe they could use to stay in touch.

If u want it as a memory keep sake you sin could decorate a wooden box from the craft store and put a few momentos in it.

My son once gave a bud a fun picture frame (it was a bit tacky but said something like "Go jump in a lake!" with a picture I took of them jumping into a lake together.

If you have a cute picture of the two of them, framing that in a boy appropriate frame would be cute.

A friend of my kids gave a bunch of pictures (printed out on paper) of their favorite sports teams and my son put it up on his bulletin board. They loved hockey and it was something they shared. It was cute because it was done by the boy - nothing very elaborate, but heartfelt and my son still has it up on his board as a teenager.

Probably a picture scrap book would be the best thing.

What about a scrapbook or photo album with pictures of them together and momentos of things that they did together. Your son can help gather things together, and he can even write a letter to his friend about their friendship and the things they did together. You could also include envelopes with your address for the other boy, so he could write letters. You can make this as big or little as you want.

I was also thinking a t-shirt. Did they play Minecraft together? Maybe a Minecraft t-shirt or a Minecraft book (my son loves the Gamenight999 books).

You could get a t-shirt of their school (if they went to the same school) or a favorite team.

This is a bit of a toughy, because I don't usually think of 10 year old boys as being terribly sentiment. I don't want to be sexist, but if you had said it was your daughter I might have suggested some jewelry or a framed picture of the two of them.

Good luck!

Your son is very thoughtful!

Since the idea is to remind his friend of their time together, I'd be sure it was a personalized gift that reflects some interest they shared. Were they in Scouts together? In a sport together? Or did they just hang out and both loved to play some particular game together? Let their shared interest be the guide. Kids this age like and wear a lot of t-shirts so one possibility is, for instance, a t-shirt for their shared favorite sports team, or with a design based on their shared favorite game, etc. You could get one made or even work with your son to make one if there's not something commercially available.
