I normally do not shop in Junior section because of my size (5'9") and style preference. I am buying gift for someone younger and smaller (5'2" and about 130 to 135 pounds). What size in Macy's Jr would you buy? I want to buy small, yet feel medium might fit better. The person has thin legs and a thick middle.
Does anyone here shop in the Jr section? I am under the impression the size medium is smaller than the women's section.
edit: The person's style is very young. This is why I am looking in the juniors. This person wears hello kitty, some disney stuff among other things I noticed in the jr section. I want to buy something she would like even if it is not my style.

Yes the junior section is appropriate & go with a medium and have the sales girls help you pick out something cute.

I am 5'2", 128-132 lbs. In womens/misses I wear a Medium top.
In Juniors size tops I generally need an XL. Sometimes a Large will do, but I can't even get a Jr. Medium on over my chest.
The best thing would be to get a gift card and wrap it with an easy-fit accessory like fuzzy slipper socks. That way she gets a present to open but without the disappointment of getting clothing that doesn't fit. It will be more fun and less a hassle for her to shop with a gift card than it will be for her to return a clothing item that doesn't fit.
In case it needs saying, make sure the gift card is for a store is available in *her* area. When people give me clothing that doesn't fit from stores that are not in my city, I end up donating them. I'm not traveling 2+ hours to exchange a t-shirt.
I am 5'2" and I weigh 125. I wear a 1 in pants in juniors. But I can wear a medium or large shirt depending on the make of the shirt. My boobs are what holds me back from a smaller size(lol) if I didn't have those I would fit into a small with no problems. If in doubt, I would go with the medium. Best of luck!!

Cash or a gift card are always the right size and color.
Let her shop for her own clothes.
Oh - and a small bright LED flashlight is the perfect gift for everyone.

Ask the staff in the store, or get a medium and a gift receipt. Or both.
I would also stick to things like shirts and hoodies and pjs and not try to guess on a dress or pants. Petite people always have problems with bottoms and dresses. I can never find an inseam short enough and non-petite dresses often hit me weird.
Describing my build. I usually do not shop Jr because most items do not account for the more curvy. Medium is the way to go. If you are looking at Jr. sizes 11/13. Size 10 Mrs.
Back in the day before a more generic sizing trend happened a Jr. Size was for young ladies/girls who hadn't had children yet. Younger. Their hips hadn't been spread out by child birth so the Jr. sizes were cut narrower in the hips and thighs. Juniors were odd sizes. 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and so forth.
Junior sizes were typically for a younger generation and the designs, fabrics, and styles reflected that.
Misses sizes were cut for the more hour glass figure, ones that had been through childbirth, nursed children, and put on a little weight in the tummy, wider hips, fuller breasts, and that sort of thing. These sizes were even numbers. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and on up.
Half sizes were for petite women and such as 14 1/2, 16 1/2, and on up through the plus sizes.
Nowadays the sizes are all mushed up together except in some nicer stores that have good designers garments.
Sizes also blend and cross over.
A young girl who wears a 12-14 can also wear a ladies small. The arm holes and necklines need to be watched so they aren't to risque for a young girl.
A girls 16-18/pre-teen is the same as a ladies medium and some larges.
For the size of person you're buying for I'd say the medium would be fine. If it looks like a larger style medium then go with a small. There isn't that much difference between the 2 sizes, probably about an inch.
A gift card might be a simpler approach.

I'm 5'2" and 120 pounds. I buy x-small to medium in the women's section, and small to medium in the junior section. Not all smalls are created equal and not all mediums are created equal so it just depends. I also don't have big boobs. Since this person weighs 10-15 pounds more than me, I would go with medium.
Are you sure you want the junior section? I'd consider the petite section of the regular department. Juniors are more often for teens and tweens who aren't fully developed. The styles may or may not be to "young" for your recipient. If this woman is curvy at all, or even just what you are calling "a thick middle", I'd stick with the regular department - there's usually a rack for petites. It's more an issue with pants lengths though, and not so much with blouses/shirts. If you're actually going to the store vs. buying on line, don't be afraid to ask a sales associate who is about the same size/shape what she'd recommend. If you steer away from really fitted shirts, you should be okay.
I am 5'1 and 120 and I wear a size 4-6, It sounds like she would probably wear and 8-10 "petite"
The petite clothes are not necessarily small (actually I find they run large), they are just made for shorter people
hm. i think you're taking a big risk buying clothes for someone even if you do share a fashion sense. i'd stick with accessories.
