So, My friends and I were supposed to go on a fabulous trip in 2015 to celebrate our 40th Birthdays. Well, we were planning on Jamaica, Riviera Maya or somewhere out of the country just 4 days. Now everyone is backing out because one has a son going to college but also likes to keep up with the Joneses, One won't go because her son is begging her not to go and shes afraid we'll get mugged or something and then she only wants to spend $200. Usually a trip gets hyped up and then we don't go EVER.

Part of me says life is soooo short and life needs to be enjoyed now. I have had so many tragic things happen in the past couple years and I'm beginning to realize that now is the time to do things and not pass up opportunitites.

Does anyone have any great ideas of places to go?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

You all are so wonderful. Its always nice to get other points of view. Going out of country does seem expensive when 2 days are on an air plane. I would rather have 4 days of fun closer to home. We are also thinking about a spa weekend just 2 hours from here and then doing other things as well. We aren't going till June or July next year so plenty of time for planning.

Thanks everyone for all your help.

If you're flying the whole amount would be spent by the one only wanting to spend $200. So go someplace close to her so she can either drive or you can pick her up.

I know what it's like. My friend is always jetting off to the Carribbean or further south. She's a sun lover. I hate heat and don't like to be outside with bugs and animals and heat. I just don't like it.

She keeps telling me we need to go to her favorite place in Galveston. She has a condo she rents every few months and then she takes her family. She sees nothing wrong with paying hundreds of dollars per day for a hotel or place to stay.

I have to struggle just to buy groceries and simply can't afford it. I'd love to take a trip and have fun like that. But I just can't.

How about a road trip to Kentucky? My brother's in-laws have a beautiful vineyard in the Willisburg area (south of Lexington). They have fun dinner and music nights. Find a nice B&B to stay at. Do a wine tour.

A long weekend in Chicago, Toronto, or NYC would also be fun, but more expensive. Go out for a nice dinner, catch a show.

Personally, I don't think I would want to go out of the country for just a long weekend. When you think about it you spend a day traveling to get there and a day traveling to get back. With airfares as high as they are it doesn't seem worth it to me to spend that much to only be there two full days. I'd want to get the most for my money and be there at least a full week. It would also be hard for me to take a big trip just because of my husband's work schedule and everything that my kids are involved with. It always sounds like a good idea until I start thinking about all of the details I'd have to work out.

We actually take several long weekends a year at a place about an hour from our home, we LOVE it. We also do some weekends in Williamsburg, about 3 hours away. It doesn't have to be far to be amazing!

My mom, my younger sister, and I just spend a fun filled weekend in DC last month - it was AMAZING, and about 90 minutes from home.

Why not try toning your plans way way down?

I had a GREAT girls' trip this past spring. You know where we went? Cleveland. Yep, Cleveland. No offense to people in Cleveland, but it's not exactly known as a vacation spot. You know what? It didn't matter.

We live in Pittsburgh and we drove up, went out to dinner and had drinks, went to a concert, spent 1 night at a hotel walking distance from the arena, slept in, and came home the next afternoon.

It was fabulous, we had a great time, it was inexpensive, and it was a short enough trip that it didn't totally disrupt our families' schedules. And it would have fit within your friends $200 per person budget including the concert ticket, shared hotel room, and food.

A girls' trip doesn't have to be tropical, complicated, and expensive to be really fun. After all, the main point is to spend quality fun time with your girlfriends, right?

I would be up for it. I agree with you but some people just don't want to or can't afford it. I'm working on one friend to go to Europe with me and I know she can afford it - just a timing issue for now. We did manage one trip together and it was a blast but we got a really good deal since one of the travelers had a timeshare connection.
Let all your friends know that you are ready to travel - maybe one will come around ;)
