Hubs took dd for her eye appt. She has been going since birth due to possibility of retinal detachment...she has been having trouble seeing white board at school the last few weeks...Dr says she does need glasses....
We changed insurance and have to use chain frame shops now.
The man a lenscrafters told us she might out grow needing glasses..everyone in both our families except this dd and my hubs brother all need glasses....I have never heard of kids who wear glasses suddenly not needing then when hormone kick in at puberty like this guy was saying... could that really happen?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ok then....some of u hitting the eggnog a little hard.lol....we are getting her glasses....the man at lenscrafters is not an optician. ..more like a used car sales man...he is the one that said she could out grow it...she is near sighted..just slightly. .. ...thanks for those that responded...have a nice weekend.
Edited....it was mostly gamma g implying we were not going to get her any corrective lenses that promoted me to wonder if she had read the question....actually wasn't meant to be rude but more haha someone wasn't reading the question. ..and his name tag said " dashawn eye wear technician" and he seriously was trying to upsale everything..as in oh honey those 125 dollar frames are nice but the rhinestone s zebra stripes and sparkles on these 350 frames would be a great starter pair for a 9 yo and u could get these other 200 dollar pink plastic ones as backup s... and by they way she might out grown needing them..it was just a very weird experience as opposed to the local optometrist that has a small frame shop attached to the office..her pediatric specialist is wonderful. . I'll ask him about this when I take her back in for her check up. ..like others have said it sounds like even if she outgrows this issue that might not mean another develops. I have never known anyone personally that has had this happen so I'm glad to hear from real people albeit my Internet freinds..still wishing everyone a wonderful weekend.

Most children are born farsighted. This corrects itself somewhere between kindergarten an third grade. It is mostly subtle enough that glasses are't needed, but if it interferes with classwork they will suggest them anyway.

Some kids will swing into nearsightedness. If the whole family has glasses, even if she grows out of them, it is probable that she will eventually grow back into them. Also if she has an astigmatism, she will not outgrow that.

This does happen. Two of my dds wear glasses. My 9 year old started when she was 5. I took her for her yearly and her prescription has improved drastically. She has a very mild prescription now. She has to continue to wear them 24/7 but the eye doctor said if she continues then possibly in 3 years she wi be out of them! No my 5 year old, she has a terrible astigmatism and will probably be a life long glasses person! Good luck with everything!!!

Yes, we were told by our son's Pediatric Ophthalmologist that it is possible that our son's eyes could improve and he could outgrow the need for glasses. Because we caught it early, he was 6 when he got his first pair of glasses, and are working to correct it now he could find he doesn't need glasses later in life. My father needed glasses when he was little, outgrew needing them for a good while but needed them again as he got older still. There is no way to predict anything like this.
I choose not to worry about what might or could happen. My son needs glasses right now so he wears them. If he happens to outgrow the need then it's just bonus. If he needs to wear them the rest of his life then so be it. Needing to wear glasses makes him just like most of the family, including me anyway LOL

My mom wore glasses from about 4th grade to about 20 years old. My mom is now 68 and has perfect distance vision but now needs glasses for closeup work. Her eye doctor told her as a kid she was very lucky that she would outgrow her need for glasses.

Just to clear up your comments and your SWH - an optician is not a medical professional, it's a person who makes the glasses! A good one has important skills and deserves respect, but doesn't give medical advice. You go to an optical shop, not for medical advice, but for the glasses themselves. Proper fitting of glasses is important, to be sure.

Eye doctors are either ophthalmologists (MDs) or optometrists - both examine and prescribe glasses, check for glaucoma and other eye diseases, recommend proper eye care, etc. Ophthalmologists also do surgery.

I got glasses when I was 7 and was told at the time that I would likely outgrow the need to wear them. Nope, I have worn glasses every day since then, with my prescriptions just getting progressively worse over time. So it is possible, but I would not get her hopes up. I was pretty upset when I figured out I was stuck with crappy vision.

Depends on the issue if they are near sighted or far sighted. If a child is far sighted it can happen because as they get older things move closer together(can't think of the exact two two parts her dr told me) and the far sighted Ness reduces

It depends on if her sight is affected by a muscular problem or not.
If she has a lazy eye and that's causing her to have trouble focusing both her eyes together, then she might not need glasses once the weak eyes muscles are stronger.
It's the shape of the eye and cornea that changes/grows as they grow - and you don't usually outgrow those sort of vision difficulties.
I was EXTREMELY short sighted - started for me in the 5th grade - and some years my vision got worse so quickly I needed a new prescription in 6 months.
I wore glasses and then contacts almost constantly until I had LASIK when I was 37 and they got me to 20/20 vision.
Of course that only lasted about 10 years before I needed reading/driving glasses (everyone needs them eventually as your corneas lose flexibility due to aging).
Fortunately, our son inherited my husbands eyesight and although our son is nearsighted, it's not nearly as bad as I had it.
His vision is pretty stable even now at 16 and we hope he'll be a good candidate for LASIK in his late teens/early 20's.
That would get him out of glasses/contacts until his late 40's to early 50's.

Additional:
Get one sturdy pair where ever you are getting them.
Get her a back up pair by ordering her them online.
We use EyeBuyDirect for that and I've got perfectly great glasses for less than $50 - often the frames are under $20 and it's the options on the lenses that will add on a bit of cost but they are still MUCH cheaper than any brick and mortar store trying to sell you a pair of $500 frames.
I can buy a pair of glasses for every room in my house and STILL not spend as much as I would on a single pair from a physical store.

Maybe she'll get lucky. I had a problem with the muscles where my eyes were crossed. One corrected young, one corrected in 10th grade. But I still need glasses for far-sightedness. Perhaps it happens often enough that the optometrist is familiar with it, but not often enough for just a regular person to know it happens?

My 70 year old sister started on a supplement for her eyes 5 years ago and her vision has improved enough to change her prescription 3 times! Eyes can get healthy and heal like EVERY part of your body.

It is possible for eyes to improve using glasses--especially for kids. My husband's niece had glasses for 3 yrs. Each yr after she got them, her eyes were a bit better. A relative had them from the time he was 4 until he was 13 or 14. Then no more glasses. I was jealous because I still needed mine.

Sara and Robert. Farsightedness in young children is very rare. If you have one that is chances are other children might be. I have 3 out if 4
They were all in glasses between 2 and 4 yo. Still all wear glasses.

LillyM my advise is until you see how she manages her glasses, stick with inexpensive frames. If she does not have to wear them all the time, kids tend to lose them. Check out insurance too.

Eta - what the hell kind of SWH is that??? Rude! You got reasonable responses. I don't care what the man's job is - he is correct! As children grow, the size and shape of their eyes change, sometimes quite dramatically and quickly, especially around puberty. They can get suddenly worse or suddenly better in a very short span of time. This seems like a question you could have easily googled. But instead you chose to ask people here and then criticize them for taking the time to answer you. And to top it off, you don't like his answer because he isn't "expert" enough for you so you ask a bunch of random strangers instead? Yeah, I think it is you guzzling the egg nog.

I need to add a clarification to the optician. An optician helps you SELECT frames, but they do NOT actually make the lenses themselves. Usually, the lenses are sent out to a lab, but some places have a lab onsite.

It is a possibility that your daughter will outgrow needing glasses at some point, but it's hard to say when that will be.

There are eye issues that change as a child grows. Children's eye sight is a marvelous wonder.

Our guys go to the eye doc each fall and he's awesome. If the doc says she needs glasses, she can't see the white board, and this might help then why not do it?

I don't know the answer to your question, but I wonder if you can use Costco? I had them make my son's glasses (he's in college) and it was a real savings compared to the eye doctor's office. The man did not try to push me into anything (I used my son's old frames) and he is very happy with the glasses.

I think that you need to stick with whatever the doctor says and ignore the guy selling the actual glasses. Most kids don't outgrow the need for them, unless there was an underlying and corrected situation, like a lazy eye. Zenni is another option for glasses if you know her Rx and what she likes.
