Goats Milk Causes Anemia?

I just put my 9 month old son on goats milk after being breastfed for 9 months (I had to stop for personal reasons). I asked for advice a few weeks ago about putting him on cows milk and everybody responded suggesting goats milk, stating that it was the closed thing to breast milk. I mentioned it to my pediatrician today and she thought I was insane. She said that goats milk it horrible for them and can cause severe anemia. She wants me to put him on formula, which I am very hestitant to do. Has anybody ever heard of or experienced goats milk causing anemia?

What can I do next?

Goats milk is better than cow's milk however, everything I searched on it, also states not for infants. Likes cows milk, it can cause intestinal problems and/or anemia when given before the age of 1. Here is some info from Dr. Sears website
http://askdrsears.com/html/3/t032400.asp

I also came across many sites saying that both almond milk and coconut milk are great subsitutes. Do more research though before giving to your 9mos old (for those concerned with almond milk, I've been led to believe this is not the same as eating peanuts, so allergies shouldn't be an issue, however, I have not personally researched it). Here is one of the sites that stated what I said about coconut/almond milk http://chrysalisyog.homestead.com/milk.html but if you google coconut milk infants you can find more.

I hope you find something that works for your son,
M.

My twins were 5 weeks early and one had breast milk jaundice. I used goat's milk and my tiny preemie boys are 6'7 and 6'4 and in great health.

I have a child with special needs and both of my youngest boys were preemies. They both had severe issues after breast milk. We tried EVERYTHING including the goats milk. Both boys got horrible excema and anemia. I was against formula too but finally after trying all that are on the market we finally had success with one that is NOT expensive - Carnation Good Start!
This was the only one that my baby with GERD and excema and anemia could drink with success - very little spitting up. They also make the Toddler Next Step that has all the proper vitamins and minerals in it. I used this brand for both my special needs babies. I suggest you give it a try before you go broke trying all the EXPENSIVE ones!!
Good luck!

Hi A.,

I remember your question...I didn't respond since I saw that so many great moms had warned against goats milk, cows milk and anemia. Since you've mentioned it again, I will tell you what I know. Although, goats milk may be BETTER than cow's milk, it does not mean that it is okay for babies under 12 months. YES, goats milk will cause anemia. I can understand your hesitation in giving formula, but you have to remember that formula is made especially for babies and their infant tummies. Good luck!

Yes goats milk can cause anemia. It doesn't have folate in it which helps prevent anemia. Formula is very safe and would be a much better choice than whole milk or goats milk. Listen to your pediatrician!

hi A., I have to agree with your pediatrician, goats milk? I have never heard of anyone giving their baby goats milk, I;m not sure why you are hesitanht to put your baby on formula, all 3 of my babies from birth to one year drank simulac with iron and I had very healthy happy babies. I my daycare many many babies that have came through my day care werrformula fed babies. Listen the women who give their advice are moms just like you, the advice that is usually given is based on personal opinions with some facts, your peditrician would not have suggested formula, it it was not the right choice for your son at this stage in life, if you are dead set against formula, I would put him on organic cows milk. It's crazy to hear that, I'm from Brazil and got raised on goat milk, I almost never get sick. I think that the doctors should be educated about goat milk, from all research I have done goat milk is one of the best milk and it's the closest to the mother's milk, it's 2% acid comparing to cow milk that is 10%, plus goats are immune to tuberculosis and it's the cleanest animal.

My lactose-intolerant baby weaned herself at 11 months and I continued Nutramigen formula (very expensive, but an excellent choice due to her issues) until she was about 15 months, then started her on goat's milk and rice milk. She is not anemic, but her pediatrician did recommend I make sure she has a well rounded diet, particularly with plenty of chicken and other meats. Goat's milk apparently doesn't have needed enzymes that cow's milk does. My 2 year old is a good eater and very healthy. Good luck!
