Going Gray - Keeping Hair Healty, Best Shampoos for Gray Hair?

Hi Moms,

I've started to go gray. It looks pretty shiny and I'd like to transition the color as smoothly as possible. I've heard it can look mousy or brassy and that some shampoos are good with bringing out the shine for gray.

Anybody have personal experiences and recommendations on products to go gray well?

What can I do next?

I have not tried them personally, but am thinking of trying out some at some point -

There is a Clairol Shimmer Lights that has good reviews (seems quite budget friendly) but then there is an Aveda product for grey hair that I bet is very nice. I have a relative who is a hair stylist who works with Aveda products and I've received gifts from her in the past and love their products (always smell nice). She swears the shampoos make a difference (over regular ones). She may be biased of course (they use all the products at their salon). Blue Malva I think it is called. It's pricey, but I do find you don't have to use much of their product, or maybe I'm careful with it.

A friend of mine uses a product for silver hair (truly silver) and it keeps the brassiness out - she has to put it in every few weeks. I am not sure if it is a shampoo though. Seems to me it's more of a treatment. Your stylist should be able to guide you - I think she has it done at her salon (for whatever she has done). It may actually be more of a rinse? She is transitioning so may actually have some color still in it.

Good luck :)

A purple shampoo will help bring out the silver tones and keep away the brassy tones. I use Scruples Platinum Shampoo (https://www.amazon.com/Scruples-Platinum-Shine-Shampoo-Fl..., as I dye my hair medium ash blonde and love the ashy tones, but sun exposure and the hard water lighten up my hair and bring out the brassy yellow tones. If money is no object, I have heard great things about Aveda's Blue Malva.

My hair stylist has been using Clairol Shimmer Lights shampoo and condition on my gray hair for 20 years and it makes it shimmer and shine. Everyone I recommended it to is very happy with there shinning gray hair.

I used to go to a salon, but I do it myself now. Honestly, I don't see much difference between the expensive color boxes and the inexpensive ones. I've used Revlon for years and been happy with it. If you wash your hair less frequently the color lasts longer. I do find that the color is richer if you leave it on about 45 min to an hour which is probably longer than the directions. I frequently just touch up the roots by mixing up a little of the color in the right proportions. It comes with a conditioner too that keeps your hair from getting damaged. If you have a lot of grey, the darker colors do a better job. Sometimes, I'll put a darker color on and the next time I wash my hair I'll put a lighter color on. That way I get the color I want but the grey is covered.
