Going"green" on Toilets

I tackly my toilet ring with one of those toilet stones they sell in the cleaning isle. I'm not sure what they are called but one of them is light blue and shaped in a half circle with a sponge on the flat side. You have to use some elbow, but I've never used anything that makes the toilet look brand new again. This works without scratching the enamal, it's wonderful thing, no chemicals.

I know you asked about cleaning a toilet in a "green" way, but have you also put anything in the tank to reduce the water usage? If not, try using a brick or fill a larger bottle with water and submerging it into your tank. The toilet will use less water each time it flushes.

I use a baking soda paste (just mix with water) to scrub my toilets and it gets them really clean. Clorox "green works" toilet bowl cleaner is probably your best bet to get the bowl clean. If you can stand the smell, vinegar works great on mirrors, windows, toilet handles, shower heads and faucets.

Hi W.! I use baking soda and vinegar with about 5 drops of tea tree essential oil. Vinegar and tea tree have disinfecting qualities.
There is a book called "Green Up Your Clean-Up" by Jill Potvin Schoff, that is extremely informative for doing just as the title says! The book contains many recipes for household cleaners that protect you and the environment!

I see 4 people have tried to sell you Melaleuca. I just quit that company. If you want a truly green solution- don't go with them. My kids and I have received chemical burns from their products.

I agree with the first post about the Shaklee products. I bought a bottle of their cleaner at least a year ago and still have a ton left! It works great in the toilet and can be used all around the house. Other brands you can buy at discount stores are method (at Target) and I think green source has a toilet cleaner now too. Try doing a quick swish every morning then you won't have to worry about the ring building up in the first place. It's very easy just to keep a toilet brush handy.

Hello W., I am so glad that you have become one of the many families that are "going green". There are many plant based toilet cleaners out there that you can try but I am not sure they would be strong enough to tackle your toilet ring...a good solution that I have found is Alka Seltzer tablets...throw a couple in, let sit for a while and then scrub away, a little elbow grease never hurt anyone. Another solution that I have hear but have not tried is using vinegar, which I use for cleaning everything from my floors and countertops to my childrens toys, it is a natural disinfectant. I agree about the bleach. It is very bad for children!! It is one of the top chemicals that poison children! I use Sol-U-Guard from Melaleuca.
