From your experience, what is a good age for a child to receive an electric toy train. I would set it up, but I would want my child to be able to run it along the track herself. Note that the train will have to be on the floor,
Mary L., it sounds like it is high time you got on Santa's lap and asked for a train :).
My son is 8. It has been our tradition since he was about 3 to set up the platform, tree in the holder and trains on the day after Thanksgiving. Last year (at 7) I would say was the first year he was able to operate them by himself completely (put them on/off tracks, remember to turn on/off the power box reliably, etc.) But he has LOVED it from day #1!
How about MY age? I've always wanted a train and I've never had one...
I wouldn't try it until the child was eight years old or so. And then the train would need to be a sturdy one.
My son got one at age 3 and he can now at 4.5 do it all by himself and loves it. :) Have fun!
It would partly depend on the child, and how much one or more adults would enjoy helping/playing alongside him (or HER!). I've always wished to have one, never had the money or the space. Invite me over, and I'll help her play with it!

For me... it would be at an age, in which I know he'd not mangle it and be responsible about it.
My son is 5 now. And he would be great with an electric set.
When he was younger, he was fine with a wooden set.
There are trains that you save and collect and are not for children so much and then there are some that are child proof and if you mean that kind I would say when ever he's ready to use it safely and take care of it. Usually they enjoy them at the younger ages but there are some nice battery powered ones too that go on their own. I love having grandsons so I can play Thomas and other fun train games. :-) Trains are fun. Our 3 year old twin grandson watch the recordings I made from TV off the RFD channel of old real trains and love it. Hours of old steam engines and old men talking and they love it. Boys and trains go together ( along with some grandma's ).
My son is age 7 and this is what Santa is going to bring him this year!!!! I am so excited. He really really wants one ever since he saw one last Christmas. Now our problem will be we have a 2 year old that is going to want to play with it too...and she is way too young. It'll be a challenge.
