I'll second Ryka. I bought a pair last month and they are great. Wore them for the first time to the fair. Walked around for six hours and my feet did not hurt at the end of the day. Usually, they would feel warm and tired.

Can anyone recommend a good pair of crosstrainers for workouts outside and at the gym?

I went to Run On off of Eldorado & Lake Forest in McKinney. They will fit you for the right shoe for how you walk and how your arch and instep are. They have helped me SO much...I am able to jog for the first time in 12 years since a knee injury...I was wearing the wrong shoes. The fitting is free.
Our podiatrist has also referred us to Run On! Shoe store. We have been to the one on Campbell and Preston (behind the WhataBurger on the SE corner) in Richardson. All of the employees do some level of running, from jogging on a regular basis to full-time marathon running. Each is trained to FIT you correctly (you will NOT get that at most stores these days!). When you walk in the store, they will ask you what type of exercise shoe you are looking for, specifically. Then they will have you take your shoes off and watch you walk away from and toward them, so they can see how your foot "lands" as you step. They will bring out several different shoes for you to try, and they will stay with you while you are trying them on, including watching you walk/run in them, to make sure they gave you the "right" shoes.
The one on Campbell in Richardson's phone # is ###-###-####. The actual address is 1469 W. Campbell Road, Richardson, 75080. There is also one in Addison at 4950 Keller Springs Road, 75001. Their phone # is ###-###-####. If either of these is too far, they should be able to give you the # to one that is closer to you.
Hope this helps!

Hello FD,
I'm a Licensed Massage Therapist, Certified Personal Trainer, Fitness Instructor & Physical Therapy Tech. The brand RYKA sells fitness shoes made specifically for women. In the 15yrs I've been teaching fitness and training I've always heard good compliments/comments about RYKA shoes. Men even buy their aquatic shoes for water aerobics/fitness. I'd definitely say give them a try first.
