my daughter has wanted roller skates for a long time. Any recommendations for a 5 1/2 year old?

You want something that is adjustable to their growing feet with ankle support. Like these: http://www.amazon.com/Chicago-Girls-Adjustable-Skate-J10-...

Be sure you get knee and elbow pads, hand/wrist guards and a helmet. Broken wrists are all too common skating injuries.

my 5 year old asked for rollerblades for her 5th birthday. so to get an idea for what she wanted and size i took her to toys r us. she decided she liked the mongoose adjustable rollerblades best. they adjust from size 1-4 (yes they are large on her as she was in an 11 at the time a 12 now). but i figured if my mil was going to buy them for her i wanted them to last a long time. so we opted for those. they are well made and she uses and abuses them. she loves to stake.
has your daughter been roller skating before? if she is maybe you can ask her if she would want skates or blades. my daughter rollerstaked on regular quad skates at the roller rink but wanted the blades instead :)

heres the brand my 5 year old has...

I can't provide you with a specific brand, but my two neices, who are now 9 and 11, had skates that strapped on over their shoes when they were first learning to skate. It gave them more stability, and they were very comfortable learning this way. When they were a little older, maybe 7, they transitioned over to the traditional 4 wheel skates. The 11 is now begging for in-line skates my I think she's going to have to wait a year or two.

I can't remember where we got the skates, but you can probably find the sterap on skates on line. Don't forget safety gear like helmets and pads! Have fun!

I got my GD roller skates at about 5 years old. She NEVER mastered roller skating. BUT the minute she put on her friends roller blades, she was rolling down the street. She says roller blades are easier. Don't really understand how that can be, but for her it definitely is/was. So, maybe try roller blades instead of skates.
