Good Start Formula

Just taking a survey on all the formula using moms who use Good Start. I recently switched my 4 week old from Similac to Good Start on the advice of a friend. I feel like I have a new baby. She would cry constantly after every feeding and only had bowel movements every other day. I have not discussed with my pedi yet but there seems to be mixed reviews on the use of probiotics in infants. I just wanted other moms view points on this. Thanks.

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for all the responses and advice. I spoke with my pedi today and she said as long as I have a happy baby who is growing then stick with it. I can't tell you how different she has been since I switched too. We no longer have constant screaming after feeding and I can actually hold her, talk to her and even see her smile.

My daughter didn't seem to tolerate much. We tried soy and other formulas before the doctor recommended the GoodStart with Probiotics. Any Goodstart would probably be just fine since they are all very gentle, however the doctor said the Probiotics offered extra things to help the immune system. The downside is that it's one of the more costly formulas out there but I have had no complaints since switching. Right now WalMart has the 25% more free cans for just $24.00 which is the best deal by FAR! It's generally around $28.00 for the smaller can. Good luck, K.!

I think your infant has answered the question. No good pediatrician is going to argue with the obvious.

I have heard nothing but positives about probiotics. We use them in our family and have had wonderful results. Your daughter seems to be having the same response.

Best wishes with your new addition!

Hey K.,

Sorry, this is really lengthy, I actually copied and pasted it from an older post I answered:

We tried Good Start w/natural cultures after our 5 week old son was fussy and crying all the time. We switched to the Enfamil Gentlease and that seemed to help some, but then I had read by a Doctor in the "Baby 411" book that a study was done that said the good bacteria (probiotics) in the cultures could help with colic, digestion and mimic the immune system boosters in breast milk. Since I stopped breastfeeding at about 3 1/2 weeks, I thought I'd try it. It could be a coincidence, but I think it made a big difference. Even his poopie turned more yellow like it was when I was breastfeeding.

It was extremely expensive however (about $30.00 a can), so we decieded to see if maybe we could switch to a formula half the price since he was a little older. We went to Target's version of the Enfamil Gentlease (about $14.00 a can), but then he did get a little more fussy and a little consitpated. (He is now 10 weeks old). Then I looked back at the Baby 411 book where the Doctor also said you could add a certain probiotic powder to regular formula. I tried that and within a day or two, his poop was back like it was on the Good Start w/ cultures and he seems a lot better....and its a much more affordable option.

If you're interested, the powder is called Primadolphilus Reuteri by Nature's Way (the same one the Dr. in the book sells in her practice). The VitaminShoppe carries it. It was about $14.00 for a 5oz tub of it, but it should last a while since you only use a 1/2 teaspoon for the whole day. (It even said on the package you can add it to infant formula.) We just mix it in one bottle of formula a day.

I'm not a doctor, but on our last visit, our Doctor said he was fine with us giving him the Good Start with Cultures, so I didn't actually ask before doing this with the other formula and powder, but like I say, he's doing great with it. I really feel that it's good for them, just like all these new Yogurts like LiveActive are for adults digestion and immune system.

Hope this helps!

When my son was 6wks old we switched him from Similac Advance to Good Start Supreme w/Iron and found his bowel movements were so much better and more regular. The new kind of Good Start w/Natural Cultures wasn't available at the time so I don't know much about the use of probiotics in infants.

You're certainly getting lots of opinions on Good Start, and I have to say that I agree that GS with Cultures is great. I'll also venture an observation that my own daughter stayed well throughout most of the winter indoors (attending playgroups, etc) in Colorado when we used it. The other kids she was around at the time had everything from tummy bugs and colds to pneumonia, so I have to think that the probiotics helped to boost her immune system.

We used Good Start with both of our daughters. We also added a couple of gas drops (Mylicon or other brand) to the bottle ... works wonders :)

My grand daughter did great on Good Start. She was fussy with Similac and Enfamil. I have suggested several friends change to Good Start over the last 15 to 20 years and all the kids did better on it.

both of my kids were on good start. it was and is the only thing they could use. my son was on supreme but my daughter can only use the green can, natural cultures. i like it. and we've had no problems. the natural can regulated my daughter. she would only poop once every few days, or it would be very formed. this helped so much.

We used Enfamil regular b/c that's what the doctor suggested, but he had terrible reflux and gas pains. We went to Enfamil Gentlease and it got A LITTLE better, but was way too bad. We later we discovered Good Start and he loved it, so we did too. It was an immediate difference, and it was like night and day.

I used good start on my first daughter & loved it, now i use it for my newest little girl to. With any formula they will probably poop only once a day. Breast feed usely tend to poop more during the day or a lot at one time. I used to use similac but my first daughter kept getting constipated really bad. I put her on goodstart & kept it ever since. Also a good tip, if you know anybody that works for alcon in fort worth, you can get a case of good start for only $32.00 & something cents. Real money saver. Alcon is partners or something with nestle so alcon can get there products wholesale.

My son was on Good Start with Cultures from the time we brought him home from the hospital. Good Start was just getting popular at that time and I decided to stick with it. I have not comparison but I never had any problems with him being fussy the only issue we ever had was some harder poop but this seems to be a lingering issue.

I found a seller on eBay who sold Good Start in the large 29.7 oz powder by the case. It saved us quite a bit of money. I also bought the cans already mixed. They worked very well in the diaper bag and for a backup at daycare. I started with the green container, but moved to the orange one when he was about 6 months old.

I can't get to my ebay account to look up her use name, but it you are interested, just email me privately. The containers were never expired and always sealed.
