Great Local Pool in Kansas City Area for Mom and Infant/toddler?

Hi! I'm wondering where I might take my 1yr-old for either swimming lessons (with mommy, of course) or just to splash around in a pool. I work part-time and all of the lessons that I've seen listed at local pools don't fit into my schedule since they seem to either span a whole week or are on Saturdays, a time when we are often out-of-town in the summers. I don't work on Thursdays and Fridays and am wonderfing if anyone knows of local lessons for infants/toddlers going on during these times.

The other alternative would be to just take my little girl to a local pool with my husband and I to get her used to the water in general, but I really don't want to go at a time when hords of kids are jumping and splashing around. Does anyone know of a local pool with specific times or areas for this age group? Or, an adult time where they allow parents to swim with infants?

I'm thinking of a big pool rather than a baby pool because I'd really like my little girl to get used to the feeling of being "in" water rather than just splashing around in it. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

Most pools you go to will have a separate baby area. I would suggest letting her play in that area, it can be really fun for her! She would love to go down the slides and use buckets, cups, shovels, etc. to play and explore. Just playing in the water will help facilitate a lifetime of wanting to swim, etc. You can also take her in the big pool with you of course, like you mentioned, at that is also fun, but just be sure to mix it up. I find the main pools are less busy during the late afternoon/early evening. You can easily go there and not feel like your little one is being overwhelemd. We live in OP and are happy with all the pools around us. Tomahawk on about 119th and Antioch also has a sand play area in the baby pool and it's really fun!

I have been to the pool in Leawood and can't rave about it enough! It's PERFECT for a one year old. It has a separate zero-entry pool for kids that is surrounded by highly competent lifeguards. There are animals to climb on in the water and a cute whale slide.

If you bring pool toys, make sure you mark your name on them. It's a friendly environment and people will share their toys with other kids, but at the end of your time, it makes it easier to get them back.

There is also a separate splash pool about 1 foot deep with a slide and bubbler area and on top of that, there are what my kids called the "fountains" which are the mushroom looking thing that has water come out of it (like a shower) and other things that she can run through.

It has a great snack area and a full locker room with showers. The place is clean, well staffed with courteous employees and there's a big water slide for you and dad. Also has plenty of shade when you need to cool off.

We had season passes for three years and it got our kids through that toddler stage. Only downfall is that you cannot bring in your own drinks or food. We did anyway, just use discretion.

They will have a schedule of swimming lessons, but they do fill up fast. For lessons in the area, check Leawood Parks and Rec, Overland Park P&R, Blue Valley P&R and Johnson County P&R.

All of the pools in Olathe have an adult swim time, once an hour for 10 minutes. All people have to get out of the pool for a pool check, then only people over 18 and younger than 2 may get in for the 10 minutes. It doesn't sound like a long time but with a little one maybe it is. Blackbob pool has a baby pool, and then another pool for toddlers that can't swim on their own but for playing with slides and other fun stuff. It costs $6 to get in.

There is a great spray park in Loose Park behind the tennis courts (on the west side of the park). We found out about it last year, and it is perfect for little ones as they just get sprayed and not totally submersed. There is also a few picnic tables under a "roof" so you can have lunch if you want.

Also, my sister goes to the local YMCA that has a great pool and lessons. Check their web site for the ones closest to you.

Not sure where in Leawood you are, but one of the best pools in the area, especially for little ones is right there in Leawood, off of Mission Road/Lee Blvd area. It's in the Leawood park. I personally have not been at the pool but but in the park many times. I've heard friends and neighbors rave about the pool!
