The tooth is dead. There is nothing you can do about it. But it will function just fine until she loses it when she is 5 or 6 yrs old. Her new tooth will be great, so no worries. And it happens to a lot of kids.
My daughter (3) was running around with her big brother a few days ago and fell and hit her mouth on the ground. I didn't see it happen but I comforted her afterwards. She cried and her front tooth bled a tiny bit. It was not loose and nothing swelled up. I just gave her a popsicle and cuddled her and she seemed fine. Well about 3 days later we noticed her front tooth is totally grey! I took her to the dentist adn they did an xray and said the nerves are dead in that tooth and all we can do is wait for it to fall out when she is 5/6. They said there is no sign of an abcess but to keep a look out for that. Have any of your kids had this happen? Does the tooth turn back to white or does it stay grey for years? Did any of your kids end up getting an abcess? How long afterwards did that happen? It's such a bummer - now she looks like a child who has horrible dental hygiene with one grey front tooth!

It's dead, not coming back to life. The only alternative is to go ahead and pull it and put in a spacer. I suppose you could have it bonded to put a white surface on it but once you do that the tooth can decay behind the bonding and look even worse.
They could possible do a root canal and put a cap in it's place. That's what they did with my granddaughters front tooth when she broke it off. When it came out with the other front teeth I could not tell which tooth was the cap...it was that good of a match.
It just depends on whether you can stand looking at it or if she'll get teased. One thing to think about is that a Pediatric dentist may have more options for fixing it to look white or doing the spacer. I would probably not worry about it too much unless she is totally self conscious.
One thing to think about too is how old she was when that tooth came in. My daughter got her first top front tooth at 3 months. So when she fell off the couch onto her playtex nurser and killed her front tooth I figured it would fall out way before she started school. It did fall out, along with every tooth both top and bottom from eye tooth to eye tooth before she ever got in pre-school. She already had several permanent adult teeth by the time she entered kindergarten.
Do check the gums over and behind this tooth every month or so. If it looks like someone has put a tiny pea under the skin then she needs to go see the doc again. This way if it does start an abscess you'll be the first to know and it won't get out of hand.
We had it happen (She actually chipped one and the other one turned grey) and I kinda freaked out. My daughter did end up with an abcess and a very swollen face and lips months after it happened. We ended up having to get the chipped tooth removed. We spend lots of money on a spacer only to find out that when it's front teeth spacers are not needed they are only for cosmetic reasons. She is now 6 1/2 and her adult tooth is coming in where the baby tooth was removed and just last week she lost the grey tooth. She has the CUTEST lil snaggle tooth smile. I know it's awful to you now but you will get used to it and not notice it anymore. Just be glad it's a baby tooth that will come out. Now with my daughter riding her bike, rollerskating, and playing on monkey bars I live in fear of her falling and damaging her new adult tooth/teeth.
Happened to my daughter but hers wasn't deemed "dead". The grey is actually a bruise from blood build up inside the tooth. So it went away! The tooth was yellowish but probably no one noticed except me. So good news is the grey may go away... Cant' swear to that though given the nerves are dead in your case. But - if the grey is from blood, it might fade and then the tooth turn yellow. You could have it pulled if not.
As far as I know, it stays grey. Since it's a baby tooth, it might be worth just having it pulled, but that can be expensive, and your dentist may have an opinion on whether or not it's worth it -- especially because the front teeth can affect pronunciation and mouth formation. Did he/she talk without you about that possibility? My nephew broke a front tooth when he was 2 and they had it pulled.
It will stay that color, although if it bothers you the dentist can do a root canal, then bleach the tooth from the inside. Seeing as it's going to be 3 years, I would probably do that. I am in dental hygiene school right now, and we see this kind of thing all the time.
My daughter had a tooth for 2 yrs that looked a grayish purple. It eventually fell out as all baby teeth do. Her adult tooth came in white so no issue there.
My niece had horrible teeth--no brushing etc. She had her front teeth pulled when she was 4. They are finally growing in . They never put in spacers, just usual trips to the dentist who of course checked all her teeth.
Similar situation happened to my nephew when he was 4 and it was both of his front teeth. They actually had them pulled (I think to avoid the possibility of an abcess which can be deadly) and he has been missing his 2 front teeth for 2.5 years now. Dentist said his tooth should come in aroun 7 years old so they are just waiting for that to happen now. As Gamma G mentioned, it is a dead tooth and it won't come back to life so it will be grey as long as it is still there. Good luck!
My daughter has this...though she has hit it multiple times. He's gets really grey, then a lighter shade and keeps changing darkness of the grey. Root too is dead. It is kind of like a bruise too., the color can lighten. Definitely watch for an access....especially if she knocks it again. My son had one and then the tooth mixture be removed. You should know...your child would complain of pain and it looks like a pimple over the tooth in the gum. They prescribe antibiotics and take the tooth out.
It is hard to see your child with one grey tooth...I actually Asked the dentist if they could cap it. He said yes...but it actually looks more unnatural than a grey tooth...which lots of kids have. And like I said...the color should lighten....and you should get used to a grey tooth and it then it looks so normal! It may take several months though....
I had this happen to me when I was a child. The tooth stayed gray until it fell out. It didn't abscess and never hurt. It bothered my Mom to have to see it though.
