My 10.5 month old DS has started to grind his teeth. It sounds so horrible! Any suggestions to get him to stop?

What can I do next?

My pediatrician said this is very normal. And many people do this and outgrow it. Sorry it sounds so bad.... not much you can do however. Just know it will end : )

They do it while they are awake?! I used to do it while I was asleep for YEARS and didn't know it. My mom would tell me it was horrible but I didn't know and couldn't stop b/c it was being done subconciously. One night I was sleeping w/my mom and grinding my teeth and she put her two fingers between my teeth as though she was going to pry my mouth open while I was doing it. It hurt SO bad it woke me up! I can honestly say it reduced the amount of grinding somehow. I wound up having TMJ as I got older b/c of all of the grinding, too so it's not healthy to do it. Maybe if you stuck your fingers in the back of their mouths (cheeks) while it's closed they'll hate how it feels a few times and stop. It's a nasty habit but it can seriously affect their jaws and have a lasting affect as well. Good luck.

My DD is the same age and has started doing the same thing! It drives me NUTS!!! Especially since she is sleeping in my room and does it while she's falling asleep, or during those times when she almost wakes up. MOST ANNOYING SOUND IN THE WORLD!!! I'm just holding tight to the thought that she will outgrow it. If she does it while I am in close proximity to her I will start tapping her mouth, which usually gets her to stop because she would rather be doing the 'indian' yell. She opens her mouth and goes 'aaaaaa' while I tap. lol.

My daughter did that at pretty much exactly the same age. It lasted maybe a month and then she stopped doing it. It's just a novel feeling to them. Makes sense if you think about it. The teeth are pretty new and exciting and it makes a fun noise! I would say don't worry about this.

My daughter did this too, it drove me nuts! I always told her no but in a super nice way. Like Oh honey please don't do that. It didn't last long hopefully it won't with you either!

My daughter is two and she still does it from time to time. She knows it drives mommy crazy and does it intentionally. Her pediatrician said its normal and hopefully she'll grow out of it. She's scheduled to see a dentist next month, I'll see what they tell me.

My kids did that, and I had someone tell me it's just them experimenting with their new teeth. It bugged me, and we were a pacifier family, so I used the pacifier to help break the habit, or in places where it was really loud and obnoxious. Perhaps not the best thing for a kid, but our kids have been free of pacifiers by 1, so it wasn't a long-lasting thing, certainly.

I would guess he does it because it is a fun, cool, new "silly" sound that fascinates him (assuming he is awake when he does it) He will probably outgrow it when he gets "bored" of the sound and sensation. If it is driving you crazy, maybe coax him to copy a different "silly" sound- like making a sound like a motorboat, or clicking your tongue, or making high pitched "monkey" noises.... He might become interested in the new sound and try to copy you, or at least stop grinding to study why mom is suddenly acting so funny!

If that doesn't work... try a teething ring or baby "chew toy"- maybe another tooth is starting to work its way up and the tooth grinding is related to that...

Good Luck!

I have been doing it for years. Try having him chew on a teething ring for awhile. This will make it stop. The dentist told me to eat a hard apple before bed to make my jaw tired. I know that a 10.5 month old can't but have him chew the teething ring or anything that will make his jaw "tired" My daughter is now doing the same thing and I have her eat the apple and then brush her teeth. I haven't heard it in a while. Good luck!

My son is 6 days away from turning 8 months old. He now has 4 teeth and has started to gring his teeth this past weekend. My nieces did it also. I suggest giving your baby a teething ring to chew on. Grant it, it's just a temporary fix but I think that making a silly noise will only make him/her do it more for attention. I'm sure it's just a phase that some babies go through. No worries
