My 8 month old daughter is getting many teeth in at once, and she will not stop grinding them. Has any one experienced this? Is this normal? I am so worried that she will not grow out of this horrible habit.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all of your responses. She is still grinding, but now I dont feel worried about it knowing many other babies do this too. Thank you for helping my nerves!

This is difficult - I would say the baby is just getting used to the sensation of having teeth. I know my son started griding his teeth and his dr suggested a mouth guard at night. But my son was 5. I would worry about putting a mouth guard or anything for that matter, in such a small child's mouth. I would be worried about hindering the breathing.

My son grinds his as well and it is horrible! I read on line that it is normal and they will out grow it. When he does this I try to distract him...give him something to put in his mouth to make it stop!

My daughter use to grind her teeth a lot when she was younger. I mentioned it when I brought her to her 1st pediatric dentist apptment (age 2). they said it was normal.
If it worries you and seems as though she does it a lot--contact a pediatric dentist and ask. She is now 7 and no longer does it, her teeth are fine.

my daughter grinds her teeth constantly and it drives me up a wall!!!!!!! it's so loud that it sounds like she's going to break her teeth. when i hear her do it i tell her to stop and she does, but only for a little while. what i realized is that she does it when she's stressed...im sure in my situation i'll have to put her in some kind of mouth/teeth guard because of it because i myself do it! if no one in your family does it, then i'm sure that it's just the teething coming in.

My daughter also grinded, and I freaked out, however, when the teeth stop causing her discomfort the grinding also stopped. Good luck

my daughter did that a little bit, about the same age too. I would just put my finger in her mouth to stop her and she just stopped on her own. The noise was awful, though!

I have experienced this!!!! This is normal for 3 out of 5 kids.
My son who is now one years old STILL (on occasion) will grind his teeth. I have read that this is a sign of anxiety!
Then when I asked his doctor about this she told me not to worry about the anxiety, he is just getting the feel of his new teeth and is probably getting more teeth and the pressure of the top and bottom teeth pushing/grinding together feels good!!
I feel that she will grow out of it! I hope my son does too! After I asked the doctor I felt much better about the horrible sound that was coming from his grinding and started to get used to it, realizing that it was just his was of feeling better and getting used to his new set of chompers!
Good Luck! I know the sound is terrible but it is not hurting her or she wouldn't do it! Right?

You know, I hadn't thought about this until I read your request...but my daughter did the same thing. I was so worried, because all the books I read said this habit might last until she was 4! She's 20 months now, and I can only recall her grinding her teeth once in the past few months. Once she's used to the teeth being in there, she'll probably stop grinding. I seem to recall my baby's grinding lasting for only a month or two. (My daughter got four molars in, the same weekend..all her teeth came in pairs.)

My son went through it. And now my 10 mos old is too. It's totally normal and very annoying. That sound drives me insane. She'll outgrow it. My favorite stage was when my son got new teeth and had to try them out, usually on my arm. This was the main reason I stopped breastfeeding.

My daughter got 5 teeth in a week and a half when she was 8 months (had 3 already). I remember her grinding occasionally, but it definitely was a temporary thing (she's almost 5 now and I can't remember the last time she did it). I wouldn't worry about it now, and I would try not to say anything or react to her while she's doing it because you don't want some response you give to be something she identifies with. In a couple of years, if she still does it, I'd want to see if there was a mouth guard or some other way to break the habit, but I doubt it will last that long.

She might have worms. Have her stool tested and, if that is the case, give her an herbal or allopathic worm medicine.

My son who is now three years old was doing the same thing. There are times that he still does it. It scared the HECK out of me but the pediatrician dentist said its normal but if you are next to the baby when they are doing it to rub their cheeks and they should stop. Actually when I was younger I had the same problem. So it is normal.

it's fine and normal, my suggestion is to ignore it teh best you can. he probably doesnt even realise he is doing it and making him aware will only prolong how long he keeps this habit for.

My daughter also had a lot of teeth come in at once and grinded her teeth. It got so bad that it would wake me up. But she has grown out of it. I am pretty sure its a normal thing. I know growing up I was a teeth grinder and my husbane grids his teeth atleast once a week in his sleep. I wouldnt worry to much about it yet.

Hi E.-
I am no expert, but our baby did that too. He is almost 2 and still does it on occasion. I think it is tougher on us than them. It is a horrible noise but they get through it. You can always ask your pediatrician but like I said, it bothers us more than them.

Good Luck.

Yes, my daughter used to do it too and it used to drive me crazy. I would always try to distract her to try to get her to stop. She is 2 1/2 now and doesn't do it very much now. Just once in a great while.

All the best,

B.

From what I was told it's completely normal. My first daughter did it often, (she's almost six now) but hasn't done it in quite a few years. They say when they're getting teeth it may happen. If they're past a certain age (I believe after two) and still doing it then it may be a stress reliever for them, that's when it may be something to look into.

My one year old was grinding too. Our friend is an oral surgeon and assured us it was normal. They just found their teeth and are playing with them. Just let your pediatrician know to make sure she's not damaging them.

Hi there~
Our daughter did this as well. She only did it for a few weeks. The sound was annoying and we worried about her teeth, but I think they are just testing the new teeth out and having fun making the cool noise...
