My son is only 11mts and he already has this habit of grinding his teeth. It is horrible., and crawls up my spine. I have no idea what to do to make him stop. It is so loud that people can hear it and when I go to the store people even tell me to make him stop. It is horrible. I have never came across a young baby that had this problem. If anyone can help please let me know.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well when he would grind his teeth I would put my finger on his mouth and tell me "No, No" and start singing or disract him right after. Now he does not grind them very often. I few times but I just say " Ethan" and talk to him about something. And he stops. For the most part he does not do it anymore.

My daughter is 14 months and has been grinding her teeth for a while now. I have not figured out a way to stop it but have heard that it is normal! It drives me crazy! Good luck!

My son is almost 11 months and he grinds his teeth, my other 2 children grinded their teeth as well. When he does it I just lightly squeeze his cheeks and he quits. It is just a stage most babies go through. It is something new. He will learn over time not to do it, until then just try and distract him. When I squeeze my babies cheeks he laughs and that's that.

B.,

My daughter is now 14 1/2 months and she has grinded her teeth since she had enough to. Fortunatly I am able to distract her and she quits but other days she do it all day long. Your little one is not alone so don't worry. My sister told me both her girls did the same thing as well. Things we think our babies are the only ones that do things actually turns out to be the norm. Don't worry, he probably will grow out of it. Babies love new sensations and learning. If they discover something new they do it over and over and over.....until they conquer, it is like a feeling of accomplishment to them. I am sure he will grow out of it. Hope that helps! :-)

Hi,

I know what you mean abou the sound. My 5 year old son does this when he is upset and in his sleep. I have tried to squeeze his cheeks, and distracting him. Has not stopped. But I know I also grind my teeth in my sleep, so if you find a way to stop it, Great.

It is very normal. I work for a pediatric dentist. Don't worry about the baby teeth, they grind them down and then make new ones. If he grinds don't the permanent teeth, they can make a mouthguard, but not until all his teeth are in. Mouthguards are pricey and with all the teeth loss and growth, it would only fit him for a few months. It isn't so much stress as it is a response to the teeth not fitting. If the bite doesn't match (and it CAN'T at this age), the body responds to it by grinding. He will out grow it. It will phase in and out as the jaw developes. No sweat.

Hi B., my 7 year old son has that same bad habit and I totally agree with you on the sound it makes! It's an ugly sound. I recently took him to the dentist for a cleaning and asked them about him grinding his teeth. They asked me if he does it because he likes the feel of it or because he's under stress. I don't believe that he's under stress so I guess he just likes the way it feels. They told me that if he can stop, then he should because it makes there teeth (grown up teeth) smaller. I guess it's kind of like filing them down. I know that your little one doesn't have grown up teeth yet so I'm not sure what it does to baby teeth. Maybe you should call your dentist and ask them how you can try to help your little to break the habit. The good thing for me is that my son was next to me when they were telling me what could happen to his teeth if he keeps doing it. So ever since then, I have not heard him grind his teeth! Thank goodness. I hope this helps some. Good luck!

HI! i don't really have advice, ut my son does this too, s you aren't alone! It drives me nuts. I think he just likes the new sensation of his teeth, you know just something new to do and new noises. Good luck!
