My 14 month old daughter is grinds her teeth all the time unless she has her buddy/nuk/pacifier. She has been doing this ever since her two teeth came in. But we are trying to break her of her buddy/nuk/pacifier. Is there anything I can do to stop her from grinding her teeth?

What can I do next?

Hi, my 2 year old son grinds his teeth and my doctor said it was normal at this age and since they are baby teeth there is no harm done. I can't stand the sound so I try to distract him from doing it, but if you can't get her to stop it isn't doing any harm.

Hi A.,
My son went through a phase where he grinded his teeth all the time for like a month, it was horrible. We just tapped his cheek with our finger to get his attention and tell him to stop. Not sure if that is what curbed the habit or if it was just a temporary thing but it worked most of the time when he would grind. I should also mention that he is a full time thumb sucker , so that may be why also. I hope this helps. I wish you the best.

I don't know if I ground my teeth has a baby. I am sure some of that is normal. I did not realize I ground my teeth until a dentist told me I did when I was in my thirties. I broke myself of the habit of clamping down on them during the day, which I came to realize I was doing. The night time is another big problem. I wear a retainer most of the time. Sometimes i forget, but even with the retainer, I grit down on my retainer (or my teeth if it is not in) and I don't know I am doing it until I wake up in the morning with a stiff jaw. I think the best thing to do is keep an eye out for the problem as the child gets older and if need be and a dentist agrees, get her used to a night retainer that she will probably need to wear forever. I don't know if the habit can ever be broken. Maybe hipnosis, but who knows? I have lost a lot of tooth mass and I am hoping I can save what is left of my teeth, which emphasis the importance of getting to the problem sooner than later.

I dont know what a buddy is but i'm assuming a stuffed animal or something. If it is I'd just let her keep it, I slept with a bear till I was a teenager no harm.
