Gripe Water?

My ten day old son gets the hiccups ALL the time. I burp and burp and burp to no avail. He is also having some gas. I've heard gripe water is fantastic. Is he too young for it and if not, what kind is the best and where do you get it?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! Sometimes the hiccups and gas don't bother him so I just let it go, but other times he gets really frustrated (usually during the night). I bought some gripe water yesterday and will try it out. I really appreciate everyone's suggestions. This website is great!

I never tried gripe water, I would just give my son a little bit of plain water in a bottle. For the gas, my little girl was VERY bad the first 3-4 months so I went through simethicone gas drops like crazy. They really worked for her though, made her much more comfortable. the ones I liked the best are the "Little Tummies" brand.

Hi R.,
Some of the "gripe waters" have a lot of sugars in them and can cause your newborn to lower his immune system. One of the best natural herbal remedies to use is Chamomile tea. You can drink the tea yourself, or soak the tea bag and swipe your nipples with the tea so he gets the liquid in his mouth while nursing. Chamomile is a natural carminiative ( gas reducer) and will help with the diaphragm contractions, gas pains and fussiness as well. You can drink up to 4 cups daily and it will transfer into your breast milk. You can even add some of the tea to a bottle mixed with either your breast milk or formula. A belly massage with lavender essential oil or chamomile essential oils also are helpful.

Hiccups are a spasm of the diaphram which are controlled by the 3rd, 4th, 5th cervials nerves in the lower part of the neck. Propping the baby's neck up or birth could have fixed these vertebra. I would seek out a pediatric Chiropractor who will uses grams to ounces of presssure to align the vertebra. Also they can check the baby's gut for the gas. To find a Dr. www.icpa4kids.com

All five of my kids would get the hiccups a lot!! I think it is just a phase that their bodies go through. It's like their diaphragm muscles aren't developed enough and so they get the hiccups alot. Mine had the hiccups when I was pregnant with them, too. But by the time they were about two or three months they got them a lot less. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I don't have any experience with gripe water, nor do I even know what it is. But I would say that if the hiccups and gas are not bothering him, don't do anything at all. They say that hiccups don't bother babies like they do us, so if he's not fussy, just let him be. Adding something new at this point would probably not be good for him unless he really needs it. Good luck!

I used gripe water with my son from the time he was a week old. It's very soothing and mild for a baby's stomach. I haven't noticed any particular difference between brands, but look at the ingredients lable because sometimes they have different things added to them (i.e. chamomile, etc.) Any Natural Food store, such as Good Earth will have it. good luck! Also, if you're breastfeeding, it could be something that you're eating. Try keeping a log of your meals and what you're eating to find out if there's any connection. My son couldn't handle it when I ate anything dairy. As soon as I stopped, so did his hiccups and gas.

Hi R.,
I have a 4mo. old girl. When I was prego. I would feelher hiccups and thought it was water torture some times. She came out with the hiccups and they were so bad we started calling them the peskys. :) Anyways she might have the hiccups a couple times a week now vs. after each feeding and violently that at that when she was just tiny.
Now about gripe water. I have 2 sisters that have used gripewater and love it. They purchased it from a store called Every Mother and Child in MesaAZ. A store for Lactating mothers and infant gear and much more. I know she is a Mama source participant. Just google the store name andthe first link is her web site. My one sisters son had a lot of trouble with gas/burping and the gripe water helped tremendously. They also hadto try several bottles with different nipples until they found one that he latched onto well. His 2nd and 3rd mo. were terrible with gas and burping until they started using gripe water and changed the bottle. I would call Jenny the store owner and talk with her. She was very helpful to me and I know she would be helpful to you as well.

When I was pregnant my baby girl hiccupped all the time in the womb. After she was born she still had lots of hiccups. She was never a big burper even though I tried. I had heard that if you try to burp your baby for 5 - 10 min and get nothing then don't worry about it. It seemed to work for her. The hiccups never bothered her and they went away on their own. She is now 9 months old and rarely hiccups and hasn't much for months now. She would get upset tummys, kind of like built up gas when she was smaller. I used infant simethicone drops for her that you get otc at target, walmart, or the grocery store.

I used the gripe water for my 4 month old, and it is really great for hiccups. You can give it to babys of any age. It is just herbs and water (ginger, Fennel, chamomile). You should be able to get it at your local vitamin store.

You can find it at local smith stores over in the baby isle. Little tummys just started carrying a version too so you may be able to find that else where but it's more exspensive. My Dr. pointed me to Smiths and that is the only place she knew it was carried in SLC valley, Utah valley may be different but I doubt it. I used it from day one and love it. We used both gripe water and gas drops however I have found they work differently so I would try both to see what works best for you. Gripe water is all natural and seems to calm a colicly gassy baby. Give it a try, you won't regret it. S., mom to 9 month old son Alex

I wouldn't recommend getting it from here, but a friend brought some back from England (got it at the Harrod's dept store). Since then, I have found it at Walgreen's, Babies-R-Us, and the local health food store. It works instantly and my daughter came to love the taste. Good luck!

He is close-You can start giving it to them at 2 weeks of age. My daughter was having the same issues and our doc. had us try it starting at 2 weeks she (is now almost 4mths).The bottle also doesn't recommend using until 2 weeks of age. It worked fairly well, but also found the gas drops worked about the same. The only place I could find it in Colorado Springs was at Wal-Greens and they only sell one brand-Baby Bliss.

My DD had terrible hiccups. Luckily they usually outgrow it. You just have to be patient, I guess! I haven't tried the gripe water. Babies just suck in a lot of air, so it's got to come out some way. Have you tried keeping him a little bit upright for a while after eating? Maybe in a swing or something? Might help the air settle.

Hi R.,

We used Gripe water with our son at about 2 weeks. Never noticed it doing anything for the hiccups. (or fussiness, or gas, or anything, really... very unfortunate!) But, what did work for the hiccups was giving our son 1/2 a capsule of probiotics a day, dissolved in breastmilk, or formula, whichever you're using. We started the probiotics on the naturopath's recommendation because our son was sensitive to many foods I was eating. I was shocked to discover that he went from getting the hiccups 3-5 times/day to none in the space of 3 days. It was incredible. A wonderful side benefit. Especially if either of you were given antibiotics (yes, that includes during labor for strep B or anything), baby gets those too, and as you know antibiotics can disrupt the digestive system. So the probiotics take care of that. Good luck.

With my first child I bought the gripe water in the hospital before we went home and gave it to him for his gas bubbles, etc. from the beginning as needed (the smallest doseage first, then multiple doseages if necessary). It worked wonders and took away my feeling of not being able to sooth my crying baby! As the ingredients are all natural, you shouldn't worry. Just give him 1/4 tsp. at a time (if that's the recommended doseage on the label; I think the bottle says that you can give up to six doseages in a 24 hour period. It continues to work great on our second child for her gas, hiccups, and teething as well!

I've never heard of gripe water but I am a mother of four boys that all had hiccups in the womb and for the first couple of months. I fed them slower and burped in between breast. I talked to my doctor and was told this is perfectly normal because their digestive systems are not fully developed until they are a year. My guess is that he will grow out of it in a few short days/weeks. Does it bother you more than him? It sure did me! Hang in there!

We use the new gerber brand of gripe water, and it works pretty well. You can find it at Babies R' Us (or some of the children clothing stores)I believe. Just read the ingredients. We got some authentic gripe water from South Africa, and I gave it to him and noticed that his breath smelled funny. I read the ingredients and it had 4.0 alcohol in it! I was so angry! I read the gerber brand from America, and it uses no alcohol. I'm not sure if you should use it when they are that young though. My son also had hiccups when he was that young and the pediatrician said there were no worries with that. I know that you feel bad for him though when he can't get rid of them! Hope this helps.

Hi, R.,

GripeWater is an import from the UK, as best I understand it. Your best bet is to Google it, and buy it online. Our daughter didn't suffer from hiccups, but did have LOTS of tummy problems. The GripeWater is a blend of anise, and as far as I know, does not contain an age rating. It's all natural, and did seem to help initially. Good luck!

R.,
also,
on his pacifier, a little drop of NATURAL ORGANIC HONEY.
After every feeding, carry him around so that he is in the standing up position, his head leaning on your shoulder, his tummy to your body, and walk around so, until he gets those 'frogs' (so we called them) out.
Honey in excess is not very good, but in a very small amount it is extremely well, several times a day do it, also good when he is falling asleep, so that during the sleep honey 'does' its work in his little tummy. in olden times this was the method and I did it to all three kids, all are adults and very healthy now.
Also, this little pacifier-honey trick helps you to make him not to get attached to the pacifier in the later days, as if you decide you don't want him to have it anymore, do not stick it into honey anymore, and he won't like the tastelesss rubber, soon throwing it away.
I really recommend it, try it out.

Little Tummys makes Gripe Water, as well as Infant Gas Drops that you can buy at the drugstore (there is also Baby Gas-X and Mylicon). My son is 3 mo. now, and for the first 8 weeks he had painful gas all the time - he would suddenly start to scream and pull his legs up. The gas drops worked wonders. I talked to my pediatrician and she assured me they were perfectly safe, even at 1 week old. However, if the gas is not bothering him, I wouldn't give the drops to him as all they do is break the gas into smaller bubbles that are less painful; they don't eliminate gas. All newborns will have gas due to their immature digestive system.

As far as hiccups go, they supposedly do not bother the baby and are good for stregthening their diaphragm, but I know it's hard to see them hiccup for 30-45 minutes at time. Gripe Water may help, but hiccups aren't really a tummy issue...

Stopped the hiccups right away and was great. overtime though we had other difficulties like a lot of gas, constant spitting up with enormous amounts of formula coming up. It comes to find out that even though i wasnt eating the wrong foods she had acid reflux. If teh gripe water works that's great but it also doesn't hurt to consult the babies doctor, especially at such a young age.

I don't know about the gripe water but the hiccups are completely normal and babies don't feel them the way we do. My son had hiccups both before birth and after he was born all the time but it didn't bother him at all. As for the gas, if it is bothering him, if he is fussy because of it, then I would address it, but keep in mind that babies bodies are adjusting to digesting your milk and they are so little that it will seem like a lot of gas. I'd only worry if he seems uncomfortable.

For the gas problem: There are Mylacon? Gas-X for babies also you can use a Homeopathic way also with a mixture called Catnip and Fennel it comes in liquid form and can be used right away. You can find in most health food stores and if not look for it online. The Catnip is what I use and I loved it you can give them as much as they need, and because it is herbal there are no side effects or overdosing. It starts working right away and helps release gas and makes them more comfortable. Hope this helps!

Both of my daughters had the hiccups pretty bad in the beginning and gas to go along with it. It seems like it's pretty common and they both out grew them in a month or so. Now at 4 months I can't remember the last time my daughter had the hiccups.

Is your son uncomfortable from the gas? If not I would leave him alone. His intestines are working for the first time, it takes a bit for them to learn to do what they are supposed to do. If he is uncomfortable, bicycling his legs is a great way to get the gas out. If it doesn't help and he seems to be in pain, you can always try the gripe water. Some people swear by it.

Good luck!

Our baby had bad gas the first 5 months and we would give him gas drops. I know a lot of people use the mylecon but it is pricey and we found that the generic brand at wal-mart worked just as good without breaking the bank. We tried gripe water (got it from our local health food store) and while it did nothing for his gas, it did help the hiccups. At 10 days old he can have both the gripe water and the gas drops. If you are worried about him having them you can call your pediatritions office and ask them, but our son was tiny when we started giving it to him (we asked his dr and he said it was ok) so I don't think it will hurt him.
