Gum in the Rug!

I just found that somone has tracked chewed gum onto the oriental rug in our bedroom. It's a pretty tightly woven, heavy wool rug and I have NO idea how to get the rest of the gum out. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

try putting a bag of ice on the gum for about 10 minutes. It should freeze it hard enough that it will peel right off. I have done this with clothes, and it works pretty well.

Hey there, I had a professional come get gum out of my wool rug and he used dry ice to flash freeze it and then chipped it off with a knife blade. He was there and gone in less than 10 minutes.

I heard that too. ICE to freeze it and then chip it away.

Try using an ice cube on it and see if you can peel it off. Good luck.

Alcohol. Just try in an inconspicuous spot first for colorfastness. Also great for gum in hair. Learned this one from my son who had put some earbuds in his mouth at the same time he had gum in is mouth. Have tried it on hair and carpeting. It works for gum lots of places it shouldn't be.

No....ice, that's too hard.

Tea tree oil... Melt's it and won't hurt the rug at all.

If you were to get it in your hair they say to put peanut butter on it to get it out. Since the rug is hair-ish it may work. LOL! Don't put all your eggs in my basket though. Just an idea.

This has worked for me before. It is a trick taught to me by a school janitor.

Get a can of compressed air (the kind you use to blow out your computer).
Turn it UPSIDE DOWN and spray the gum in a few short blasts. The UPSIDE DOWN part is key, because the gum will freeze upon contact with the spray.
Now you have frozen gum that you can chisel out. I use a painter's tool (scraping blade) for this step.
Done.

set some ice on top of it, leave it for awhile, after a little while you can actually with your fingernail scrape the gum out, repeat if needed.

Okay, I know you're going to think I'm INSANE, but go with me on this. . . .
Warm vinegar.

Put it in a cup, zap it in the microwave for 10-15 seconds to warm it up, then use a soft rag/washcloth to dab it on the gum, and rub gently.

I just took gum out of my carpet a few weeks ago, and have gotten it out of clothing several times in the past.

God bless my sis-in-law for teaching me this trick.
I SWEAR - it WORKS.

Best wishes -
M.

I would caution against anything oil based as you don't know if it will stain the rug (peanut butter, tee tree oil, goo gone etc.) I would definitely try the compressed air and/or ice.

Good luck!

Try rubbing ice on it. Hope this helps.
