Had a Gush of Fluid After Waking Up, Discharge or Amniotic Fluid?

This is my 3rd pregnancy and i have not had this happen ever. I have been under an extreme amount of stress and I was in a car accident over a week ago but everything was fine and i was sent home. My husband has a back injury and I have been dealing with all that comes with that and his upcoming surgery.
I hve had 2 c sections.

This morning I woke up stood up put my pj pants on and took 2 steps and felt a gush. I came down stairs with my kids and went the the bathroom and saw a little discharge, and the rest of the crotch was just WET, and so were my pants in the crotch.

I made the kids food and then put a small face towel in my undies since I have no pads. Now I am laying here waiting to see if anything happens. i do feel wet still. I am 28 weeks pregnant.

EDIT. There wasn't really much of a smell. It was not urine and did not smell like my normal discharge to me.

What can I do next?

I hope you've listened to some of the other advice urging you to call your OB/midwife/NP/whomever and alert them that you're heading to the ER to have a Labor Check done. It does sound as if your water broke, although it's possible that your plug popped and the gush of fluid is the fluid build-up that was behind it. In my third pregnancy, my plug popped when I sneezed and there was a huge gush of fluid that was not urine, but it ended up not being amniotic fluid either. I was about as far along as you are now.

The good thing is that the plug can continuously regenerate if it is the plug. And if it's your water, the amniotic sack can tear and repair itself but you may end up on bed rest. I hope that whatever the case, you're able to get to the ER and you're both safe and sound.

Hi D.-

Call doc right away...

And...just to let ya know...amniotic fluid smells sweet or neutral.

Save the 'towel' and there is a strip test the doc's office can do to be sure.

Sending healing thoughts!

Keep us posted.

You need to call your doc, pronto. My sister had this exact same thing happen, she woke up and thought she had peed in her sleep. Turns out she was leaking amniotic fluid.

I don't want to scare you, but they admitted her the same day. Besides, it's always better to be on the safe side. Let us know.

Please call your doctor. They are going to want you to come in and be seen, I'm sure. It sounds like you are leaking amniotic fluid. Either your water broke, or you have a leak. Either way, at 28 weeks, you need to be SEEN. Pronto.

I hope by now you have called your doctor. If not, please do so NOW.

My best friend is an OB-Gyn doctor in her final year of residency. A few years ago when she was pregnant with her first child she ignored her leaking fluid, only to find out once she finally went to the hospital that almost all of her fluid was gone, and she had an infection.

Please don't take any chances. Call your doctor and go to Labor & Delivery.

You'll know it's amniotic fluid if it keeps on trickling out.

My water broke before I had my first (term). Contractions did not start on their own.

Regardless, if it continues, you need to head to the hospital for a check.

It sounds like your water broke to me. That is exactly what happened with both of my pregnancies. I didn't have a lot of contractions before hand. My water broke, so I went to the hospital and both of my children were born several hours later. I would head to the hospital now and call your doctor. Good luck!

You sound like me! Same thing happened to me but mine was shortly after I went to sleep. I went to the doc and turned out I had a kidney infection. I didn't have any symptoms b/c my back hurt normally. I got some antibiotics and it cleared up. To be safe, call your doc & keep us updated!

I had that happen to me, I thought my water had broken it was so much and there wasnt an odor. Went to L&D and turned out it was just mucus. It builds up while you are sleeping, like in a pool, and when you get up out it comes. But if you are concerned you should call your doctor.
