Had a Tubal Ligation Last month....so, Is This Normal?

I had a tubal ligation on Sept 14, and I started my period that same day (lucky me). I was told by my OB/GYN that it would be painful (it was horrible) but she never said anything about my missing a period - I am 11 days late. I took a pregnancy test, which came out negative (no surprise there, I'm very conscientious about safe sex) but I'm wondering why I skipped a period. I tried calling my OB/GYN, but apparently the nurses that work there don't know how to return a phone call. Has anyone else had a tubal and had this happen to them?

What can I do next?

I had a tubal after my 2nd son last year - I didn't have a period right after and I have always had irregular periods and still to this day - I have missed mine this month actually. I was concerned also, but my OB told me that many things can contribute to a missed period - so I try not to worry. I did not have any pain afterwards though, only a little cramping (felt like menstrual cramps). I don't think you have anything to worry about - my OB did offer to put me on the pill for 3 months to make my periods normal again, that may be an option.

My experience from my tubal was a nightmare. I had my daughter in January of 2003, then a tubal in September of 2003. After my tubal I never had a single period. I went to my OB/GYN and they ran test after test and could not figure out why I was not having a period. A year went by with no period, then they decided to do surgery. No luck still no period. I even took birthcontrol to try to have a period and still did not work. Finaly seven surgerys later and no luck to have a period, I just opted for a hysteroctomy (at 25 years old). I had the hysteroctomy in September of 2005. Best decision I have ever made, considering I did not want any more children anyways.

I had my tubes ties 4 months ago after my 3rd child. I had a 2 day heavy period in June,2012. Since then I have not had a period, I took a couple pregnancy tests and they came back negative. I called my doctor but no return call back. I have had signs for pregnancy but nothing else. Boobs hurting, bad cramping, gums bleeding, hair falling out....but im not sure what to do anymore.

NOt really, my husband is a Stna, and he said you shouldn't have missed a period, I would get another doctor, another opinion, etc. You are too important to let something like that go, I mean we are mom's!!! right...Luv, T. Marie

Maybe due to pain and stress? There are many things that can cause you to skip your period.

I have been terribly irregular since I had my tubal done, and as a result have taken more pregnancy test than any normal person would think possible. After 3 years I just come to expect it. It's probally nothing but a reaction to the surgery and don't forget that the more stressed out you get by the fact that you are late teh later you can be. good luck but this seems pretty common. I hope all goes well. take care.

Hi M.,
I had a tubal a little over 3 years ago. Just this summer I had missed 3 periods in a row. You can imagine I was going out of my mind. I took 3 pregnancy tests that all came out negative. Then I went to the Doctor. He said everything looked fine asked if i had been stressed out and I for once hadn't been stressed out in awhile. He said to just wait for another 3 months and come back then If I didn't start. Fortunetly, I started that month(the day b4 my birthday but, I didn't care...lol). So anyway I would just try not to worry about it and hopefully you will just start soon like I did. I wasn't one for missing my periods so I of course thought the worst. Which is probably why I didn't start. I wasn't stressed with life but, I'm sure worrying about not starting made me late. So I would just try to put it out of your mind. Good Luck!

I've had my tububal for 7 years and after about four years have had more female problems than i can count. But to answer your question, yes, it's normal to skip after having a tubual, but it's not normal to skip at all. I didn't believe I was pregnant, but i thought something else was terribly wrong. Well, nothing serious but i was found to have several small fibroids on my uterus (which run in my family). That has caused me to become anemic and to skip periods, well long story short, i went to my gynie and she put me on the b/c patch (not good with taking pills and such) and it did wonders for my cramps (which feel like labor pains every month)and my sex drive but most of all, it put my periods back on track. I haven't skipped in over 2 years and i stopped using them after about six months of use. Only downfall is that the cramps are back and are feeling like labor pains again. I am on a neproxin regimine and that seems to help with the worst of the pain during my first 2 days of my period. And, my period is so heavy I have to use super plus tampon with a night time Always pad.So, you will experience some skipped periods, but see your doctor, cuz you need to have your period every month.

I don't know how your whole tubal went. But when I had mine last year my whole tube ruptured. I didn't have a period right afterwards. In fact i didn't have a period until the next month. I was just told by my ob/gyn is that its because my body knew that it was something different there and that it just had to go back to normal. Also when they did a urine preg. test it came back negative. It was the blood work that showed otherwise. So unless you have been having sex afterwards and there is chance that you could be pregnant again, then its just your body going through the changes. You should be back to normal next month. Also your cycle maybe changing from the whole process. If you were to skip the complete month and you are worried about that you are, I would go to the doc and have them do some blood work. otherwise I would wait it out and see what happens the following month.

Any time there is a big change in your body it has the potential to mess with your menstrual cycle. Since you had a heavy period last time, you may only get spotting or a light period, or it may come really late. I wouldn't worry about it, but don't give up on trying to speak to the nurse or doctor. If the clinic doesn't have a triage/advice nurse you can talk to during office hours, ask to leave a message on your doctor's voice mail. That way, you know the doctor will get it, and you may have a better chance of your call being returned. Your cycle will likely return to normal in a few weeks. I understand how frustrating it is when your body decides to be unpredictable! I hope this helps.
