I had the same problem till I started taking a B-complex vitamin. I still shed, but not nearly like I used to. Good luck.
I have really thick hair. I went to get it cut yesterday b/c it was so long and heavy, it was hurting my head. The stylist said while washing my hair that a lot of it was falling out. She asked what shampoo I used and said it's my shampoo. I use Suave Professionals usually and right now I'm using Garnier Fructis. I basically use what I can afford. I do lose a lot of hair, but I never really thought much of it.
Is what she's saying true or is she just trying to sell me their shampoo? Anybody else have a similar problem? I'd like to lose less hair just b/c it's annoying having to sweep it, vacuum it, pull it off clothes, etc.
Thanks!

I, too have a lot of really thick hair. Twice a year it sheds (just like my dog and cat) and I lose a lot of it at one period of time. In a month it is back to being really thick. I doubt it is you shampoo.
I'm a stylist, so I can give some advice here. It's normal to lose a lot of hair. Hair grows in different cycles as well, so you will shed in one area while another area grows and then it switches (one reason why one side of your hair sometimes feels longer then the other after a while).
On days you wear your hair up or in a ponytail all of that loose hair that fell out is caught in your ponytail, so the next day it will feel like twice as much has been shed.
In any case, the time to worry about your hair shedding is if it drastically increases from your normal hair loss, and if you start to notice thinning or bald patches, which could be related to a thyroid problem, or even alopecia.
Women often lose a lot of hair when they are sick, stressed, and after pregnancy and when they wean their babies from nursing.
Mechanical causes for hair lose (notably breakage) would be brushing hair when wet, towel drying too hard, backcombing, wearing tight ponytails or tight hairstyles in pins, wearing ponytails with wet hair, chemical damage from perms/coloring, heat damage from rollers/flat irons/curlers/blow dryers... if you use heat treatment for your hair, you absolutely must use a heat protectant. I love Paul Mitchel's Seal and Shine for that.
As far as salon brand shampoos, yes, many are better than grocery store brands. I prefer salon quality, but Garnier Fructis or John Freida are grocery store brands I use sometimes. Stay away from Pantene... it has too much protein which can dry your hair out over time, make it brittle and cause it to break! So, her telling you it could be the shampoo could be true. If you are losing the hair from the root, then no, it's most likely not true. But if you are losing the hair due to brittle dryness of shampoo, than most definitely she could be right.
In addition to other posters, if we all lose about 100 hairs a day and you wear your hair tied up in a ponytail or up in a clip, then when you take your hair out of the clip, all 100 hairs that have loosed all day finally are able to fall to the floor. So it may just be that you are seeing all 100 hairs coming out at once since they've been tied together with the hair tie.
This is likely an easy fix. It sounds like your water-protein balance is off. Check out hairlista.com. I learned so much there and it has really transformed my hair! You'll learn how to grow healthy hair and minimize shedding.
Happy hair journey!
I have thick curly hair and A TON comes out when I wash it. I wouldn't worry about it. Oh I was just going to say what Jessin Texas was saying about hair in a clip.
While pregnant you lose less and after birth you lose all that hair you held onto while pregnant. If you did not recently give birth within the last few months, and you are not actually showing bald spots, you may just be a heavy shedder. If you were a guy I would say it may be coming from all over your body not just your head - my husband is very "furry" and I could make a pillow a month with all the hair I sweep up, lol!
Like Jennifer said, it's normal to lose 100 strands a day. I also heard that if you don't wash your hair very often, then when you do wash it, you may loosen hairs that have been about to fall out since the last time you washed. Then it looks like you're losing a lot more hair all at once but it's really just a buildup.
After the birth of my son (now 6 months old) there was hair EVERYWHERE...my hairstylist mentioned Biotin (vitamin). I started taking it and it help alot....stopped finding my hair everywhere!! You have to take more than 1000mg a day...they sale it at walmart it's the green bottled one...fairly cheap too.
Your hair falling out can be a number of things. For a stylist to tell you it is the shampoo is poo!
Stress, illness, lack of protein, the genealogy are all reasons hair can fall out.
I've had major hair loss since having three kids, but I have yet to figure out the cause. I buy the shampoo I can afford as well, so maybe she has something there. I don't know for sure, but I know I cannot afford salon priced shampoo!
You're supposed to lose between 20-100 or so strands of hair a day. I honestly think she's just trying to sell you her shampoo. You can use a less expensive shampoo and still be fine. It could also be hormones. You might lose more hair closer to your period.
Honestly, I wouldn't be too worried about it. Keep using the shampoo you have been. You don't need the more expensive stuff. (If you do decide that you want to use a more expensive shampoo, go to Sally's Beauty Supply and look for the generic of the same shampoo.)
I have insanely thick hair, and also need to keep expenses low. I use Dove and haven't had a problem, though I have in the past with some other shampoos. Mostly, it was drying my hair out too much and breaking it. My hair stylist, instead of suggesting an expensive shampoo which they always want to sell you, suggested I wash my hair less frequently. I was washing every day, went down to every other day, and now I wash it every 3 to 4 days. My hair has adjusted (not greasy) and my natural oils have made my hair healthier - even my stylist has mentioned what great condition my hair is in.
Another thing, less frequent washing also results in less pulling while wet, less yanking during drying (it takes thick hair a long time with a dryer) and less styling since it has already been styled once. So, less hair loss.
my hubby and kids lose a lot of hair.. it's always all over the bathroom.. ugh.. they have thick hair and dark hair.. so it shows up more.. i have thin blond hair.. and mine don't fall out so much... we use what we can afford... i don't think it matters..
Hi J.,
While you may not need a more expensive shampoo and has been described by the women here, there are many reasons for increased hair loss, I can tell you that Suave is the worst thing to put on your hair. Not only will it cause hair loss, but it strips your hair and causes it to look dull and grimy over time and can also be a frequent source of dandruff. Have seen this many times.
I am almost 50 and started losing my hair in my mid thirties. d/t hormone changes and stress. Do what you can now to take care of it. These ladies have some very good suggestions but I would say have a Dr. check you out as well if it doesn't slow down soon.

It may be an iron dificiency. Have that checked out and see what happens. I know after my pregnancy, I had one and once I started taking iron my hair greatly reduced its shedding.
You might want to mention this to your doctor. It could even be thyroid or just age. I don't think it could be the shampoo but maybe see if you can check the ingredient lists online. My impression (and I may be wrong) is that most shampoos have the same active ingredients. Maybe some other ladies know for sure.
I have super thick hair that is curly and frizzy. Although I like the Fructis line of shampoos I also use the Suave professionals, I switch between the 2 brands. I have never had a problem with Suave, I don't find it strips my hair at all or that I have more hair loss with it. Just about every salon will tell you store brands are no good so you will buy their expensive shampoos. I've used the expensive Aveda brand from a salon and I was not impressed! I switched back to Suave professionals! I also use a leave in conditioner called Suave 360 for anti frizz, it works great for my hair.
Pregnancy does a lot of strange things to your body. Six months post partum and I was still loosing lots of hair. Also, as you get older your hair starts thinning out, but that usually doesn't start happening until late 30's (from the women I know).
I've never heard that it could be caused by shampoo, unless your having a reaction to a specific kind.
If you just had a baby your hair may be falling out as a result. That's normal, it happened to me, too. My house was a hair palace for a while. I've heard that the whole shampoo thing is a big ruse. Buy what you can afford. She's trying to upsell you.
Hi J., You definitely don't need a more expensive shampoo. I agree with the other posts. Check with your doc about a vitamin. My hair has also thinned so much since being pregant giving birth and bfeeding. I actually heard that chemicals in shampoos are not great for your hair and you should use less, not more.
